Journalists are nearly ruthless when they are pursuing a story or angle. So it's probably par for the course.
Journalistic integrity has been slowly vanishing over the past few years. All reporters and news channels care about these days in sensational headlines to get as many clicks as possible. The truth is secondary and at times even irrelevant. As for Nikki, she had already begun to mature and to realize that there are limits, but this incident solidified it for her. I have a feeling she will not go back to being a journalist.

Nikki quit the paper and is writing a book, which was noted in the epilogue.
Their insensitivity in how they approached Nikki about the interview was what I found reprehensible. She’d just lost her best friend and they could have cared less. If the leaders don’t have integrity, so goes everything they lead or produce. This was an ugly moment.

I think Nikki definitely would have asked those questions to someone else. After all she is a reporter first I just think its her nature.
