A Princess of Mars is a science fiction novel by Edgar Rice Burroughs, forms the first part of his Mars Trilogy, and follows the adventures of American Confederate captain John Carter on the planet Mars as he attempts to rescue the Martian Princess Dejah.

There are actually eleven books. From what I've heard one wasn't actually written by Burroughs.

And the green Martians are really cool.

I read them all many years ago, except the last in the series, John Carter of Mars, which is actually two short stories published at separate times and absolutely awful!
The rest are entertaining.

I just finished it. It's entertaining Spartan like-Rambo-Romance pulp.

I just reread this last year and for some reason didn't give it any stars. I didn't like it nearly as much as I did when I read it as a kid. I found the first third or so very boring this time around and didn't love any part of it, but at least it was more interesting in the last 1/2-to 2/3.

I really like Woola, John Carter's "dog".

I enjoyed this one a lot. It was a reread from a long time ago-great escapist reading!

The most interesting thing for me from this book was the subtle suggestion that the traits of love and friendship and truth and honor and justice may be universal. And that for some reason if we ever encountered an alien race they would share an appreciation of these with us.

Other than that, Burrough’s prose felt careful and his execution of the book very deliberate. Because of this and some other stuff I talk about in my review, I would grade this better than pulp, actually, despite its bloodbaths and derring do.

That was one of the things I liked about the book!

I just love this book. Its one of my favorite series. I like this series way better than Tarzan.
