Good day all, and welcome (or welcome back) to the Victober Goodreads group. Now that Victober 2021 is fast upon us, here is a thread to introduce yourselves.

I'm Katie, of Books and Things on Booktube, one of your hosts, and a massive fan of Victorian literature.

Maria Cristina (puella63) | 36 comments Cristina from Lisbon, Portugal. Last October was my first Victober. It lead to my starting of a Booktube channel: Knitting, Books, etc.
I seem to be easily swayed into readalongs.
That’s why I’m only choosing 4 books for Victober.

message 7: by Anki (new)

Anki (shadrachanki) | 8 comments I'm Anki, and I'm in New Hampshire. This will be my second Victober, though I will admit my participation last year was more of the lurker variety. I majored in English literature in college, and I somehow managed to...avoid basically all Victorian literature. Still not entirely sure how that happened, but in some ways I think it may have been a good thing overall since it means I can come to the books on my own pace, without the pressures of giving the "right" answers for a class, or of being required to analyze everything within an inch of its life.

I'm not sure how many books I will end up reading this year for Victober, but I'm looking forward to it!

message 25: by Tiffany (new)

Tiffany | 18 comments Hello! I am Tiffany. I tried and failed last years Victober due to issues with my personal life, but am really excited to try to read some Victorian classics as I've added more to my shelves this year.

I am hoping to read at least one book by Charles Dickens this year, but I think I am looking forward to some Wilkie Collins and Elizabeth Gaskell- both of whom, I've heard are outstanding writers.

While I do not have a booktube channel myself, I am starting to get into book blogging and will look forward to discussing my reading journey throughout Victober. I can't wait to see what others in this community choose to read!

I discovered Elizabeth Gaskell through previous Victober's and recommendations from Kate and Katie and she is now one of my favourite authors and I am reading Our Mutual Friend at the moment after watching Katie raving about it. looking forward to seeing what everyone is reading and what they think about them. My only worry is about the number of books I will be able to get through as the one's I am planning to read are chunkers!

message 45: by Renee (last edited Sep 11, 2021 08:39AM) (new)

Renee G. | 2 comments Hi everyone! So nice to meet you. This looks like an awesome group. I'm Renée. I currently live near Dallas, Texas, United States. My Instagram is TyrionRidesTheSow. Sometimes I post my books. I've loved Victorian literature for years, and literally 5 minutes ago I searched Etsy for "Victorian book shirts" so I could show off my love for those wonderful stories. One of the first results was a Victober shirt. I didn't know if that was a real thing so I Googled and ended up here. It's so funny that I've been on Goodreads for years, I've loved Victorian novels for years, and yet this is my first time knowing about Victober! :-D I recently got a Kindle book of everything Conan Doyle ever wrote. I finished the Sherlocks (currently re-reading them--they're so good!) but I'll continue with his novels for a while. Again, hi!

message 46: by Becky (new)

Becky | 14 comments Hi, I'm Becky living in the Eastern part of the United States (but raised in the Midwest). I'm an IRL friend of Kate Howe, one of the hosts, and thanks to her enthusiasm this is my 5th Victober. I'm in a busy season of life, so I'm keeping my TBR pretty minimal this year: the group read, Catriona by Robert Louis Stevenson, The Tenant of Wildfell Hall by Anne Bronte, and if time permits one more book, TBD. I'm an avid knitter and look forward to atmospheric audiobooks during Victober so I can listen while knitting.

message 47: by Alicia (new)

Alicia Hi I'm Alicia. I live in Atlanta, and this is my first Victober. I'm thinking of reading The Tenant of Wildfell Hall, Vanity Fair, New Grub Street, The Woman in White Wives and Daughters, the group read, and I'm joining another group read of Wuthering Heights. I have found several of the titles in the Audible plus catalog and in Kindle unlimited.

message 48: by Susan (new)

Hello, everyone! I'm Amanda from Brazil/Rio de Janeiro and I love reading classics; I've been a fan of victorian literature since my teenage years. This will be my first Victober so I'm really looking forward to it!

message 50: by Robert (new)

Robert Colvin | 1 comments I'm Robert and I have a Ph.D. in Spanish literature and teach at a 4-year university. I don't say this to brag but rather to say..."KATIE KNOWS MORE THAN I DO". I love her videos and her recommendations are so welcomed and her knowledge is...just wow.
I will be listening to "Framley Parsonage" by Anthony Trollope and read by the amazing and (sadly) recently-departed Timothy West. I also will try to get to "Desperate Remedies" by Hardy, my favorite British writer and since I've not read Elizabeth Gaskell yet, I would very much like to try the "Gothic Tales".
