Dan | 18 comments Is there a hardboiled or noir story collection or novel that is in some way related to this group that you'd like to buddy read? If you're interested in reading a specific book, outside of the group reads, then here's the place to post and find a buddy! Simply add your buddy request to this topic.

(Friendly tip: Many books are sold as eBooks through Amazon and other services. Many in this genre in particular are out of copyright and therefore being reprinted very inexpensively. More and more material from the pulps in particular is being made available this way, but the stories are of highly variable quality. Before committing to a read, group or buddy, I suggest going to Amazon to read the 'see inside' portion of the book in question. If by the end of that you are not hooked, or the story has some things that are unappealing, I'd simply leave it alone.)

Once two more members commit to the buddy read (minimum of three total) I'll assume all three of you want to read the book immediately (unless you state as you're agreeing that you want to begin at a later date). I will then set up the discussion topic space for you and place the buddy read book on the schedule for later the same, or the following, month.

See the other post at the top of this folder for the schedule for your read and the link to its discussion.

Dan | 18 comments Our moderator has actually written a novelette in the noir / SF dystopia genre. March and September are our group's two off-months of the year. I propose we read his novelette Seventeen Words for Rain: A Johnny Jewel Novelette by Douglas Morrison for the last half of September? Douglas says his book is professionally produced, edited and everything.

A novelette, by the way, is a long short story; it's shorter than a novella, which is a short novel. I would need a second and third affirming commitment to buddy read to place Douglas's book on our new buddy read schedule. Hope everyone's back to school September isn't becoming a pandemic nightmare like it is here in South Carolina.

Okay, people, initially I dismissed this as being not suitable reading for a dedicated classic Noir site, but we are not that anymore. So I now have two volumes in my new series, four stories in the life of the Gunshark Johnny Jewel.

The two volumes are :-
Seventeen Words for Rain: A Johnny Jewel Novelette
Bullets Dancing in the Rain: A Johnny Jewel Novelette

I would dearly love to make this a Group Read for all interested, and besides that, if you don't like the first story that runs to 70 pages you can always dismiss the second volume?

So anyone wanna jump in?

Hmm, second suggested buddy read and this one is only 14 pages.
Jac has written an intriguing nongender novel featuring darkness and suggested violence, while not strictly Noir it does raise questions?

Anyone feel we wanna try this?

Zain So. You’re saying that your second novel has finished with editing and it is now ready for purchasing? I’m talking to Douglas. 🤷🏽‍♀️

Hi Zain, yes indeed I am, all done and with a bit more wordage than the last one.

Also the third volume is written and being edited currently.

I am the speed king, you should hear me sing! as Deep Purple once sang.
