Angie ☯ | 3207 comments Hi team and welcome to Bill & Ted's GR Adventures, dudes!!!

Where did the day go?!?! I was going to post this welcome message right after the thread was opened. Sadly that was almost 5 hours ago!! Work is so bogus!

I'm serving as Jenny's Number One (hehe - any Star Trek fans?) for our travels through time. I am very excited to play along with and get to know all of you!

I live in East Tennessee, work crazy hours and hardly ever sleep! Well, because books and challenges.... Yes way!!

Hope everyone is looking forward to playing. Feel free to share a little about yourself, let us know if you've played before, or just chat!

Where is everyone from? What is your favorite time travel adventure and/or time travel book?

message 14: by Angie ☯ (new)

Angie ☯ | 3207 comments I hope everyone finds their way here - I wasn't able to send messages to everyone because of GR changing the settings to a default of "receive messages from friends only".

If everyone would accept the friend request that I sent, it will help with checking shelves, sending reminders, etc. Thanks!!

message 15: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 8180 comments Hello everyone!
I second my Number One's take on work being bogus. Especially on a Friday! But, weekend, yay!!!!
By the way, I do love the Number One designation, but consider us co-captains. Yes, even if we go on away missions together, leaving a lowly ensign in charge, we are totally on it. Did I spell ensign wrong? It looks wrong to me.

Anyway, I am Jenny, I live in Phoenix, where it is finally out of the over 100 degrees during the day phase, and evenings are lovely.
I live with two kitty-monsters, who basically rule my life. When I am not seeing to their every whim, I own/run a picture frame shop, watch football, binge silly and/or good tv shows, and of course, read. A lot. More than is good for me perhaps, but I don't think any of you will be judging me on that.

I am looking forward to this iteration of Wheel. I have done a few of these and they tend to be crazy fun. I get the impression that it is going to start out easy, and then get more intense as it goes along. So, start hoarding hard letter books. Do it now.
There is some chatter amongst the other team captains about who is destined to win this challenge, and I think that Bill and Ted have a really good shot at it.
I do know that at least a few of us on this team are competitive. Not naming names, Angie and Angela and Donna, but you know who you are. As to everyone else on this team, I do know a few of you from past challenges, and I very much look forward to getting to know the rest of you.

If you have not done Wheel before, ask as many questions as you need to. We will be using a spreadsheet to enter books into, so if any of you are uncomfortable using a spreadsheet, let us know and we can set up a thread for completed books. Either way is fine.

Later tonight or tomorrow I will have links set up to the spreadsheet, the rules and any other relevant thread or site that we need for reference in message 5 above.

I plan to send friend requests to those of you who I am not already friends with shortly, so please accept the request, as it is easier on the captains to keep track of stuff.

I love a chatty team, so I hope you all feel comfy talking about whatever you want to talk about on this thread. Book recommendations, snarky comments about other teams (teehee), What you had for lunch, pretty much anything is on the table. If any of you prefer a nickname other than what shows up on your message header, or prefer certain pronouns over others, let us know.

Happy weekend, and let the games (almost) begin!

Jenny | 8180 comments Hi M! Welcome!

message 18: by Keely (new)

Keely (kiwifruit192) | 1993 comments Hello all! I am Keely and this is my second time playing Wheel.
I am from the UK however I am currently in Norway and will be for at least most of this challenge if not all of it. I am planning to move to Norway permanently as my boyfriend lives there, but I need to find a job for that to happen.
Because I am away from home, I dont have access to the books I physically own, but I have various apps that I can use instead.
I also dont think I will be able to read a whole lot which is why I said I would only be able to read about 5 books a month, however as the page count it what matters most (from what I have read) the books I have planned are on the longer side.
I had a look at the books I want to read for wheels on the cover and found three that I could potentially read. One I definitely would like to read as it had been on my To Be Read list since 2012!
I will post the book later and maybe some of the others I am planning to read as I am currently on my phone as it is the middle of the night and I should be sleeping (but I'm struggling).
I will try and join in with some BOM too if I can get a hold of copies.

I'll stop there for now. I'm looking forward to playing with you all!

message 19: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 8180 comments Hi Keely! Welcome to our excellent adventure!

message 20: by Carrie (new)

Carrie (carriele1216) | 1334 comments Hi all! Carrie from Pennsylvania.

This will be my 4th time playing Wheel and I can't wait. It's definitely one of my favorite challenges.

I'm old enough to say that I remember watching Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure long ago as a teenager!

I am a freshly made empty nester. So it's me, my hubby, our Westie pup and 3 rescue kitties.

I love football (Go Steelers!) and reading. Fall is my favorite season because I love cool nights and warm days. PA has some pretty spectacular changing leaves to admire!

Looking forward to playing with you all:)

message 21: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 8180 comments Hi Carrie!
Go Packers!
At least we aren't backing division rivals, there would be a little bit of ribbing going on I imagine.
I am glad that someone gets the gorgeous leaf changing. I keep having to remind myself why I moved from Wisconsin to Arizona, where there are basically no seasons. Oh well.

message 22: by Keely (last edited Oct 02, 2021 10:20AM) (new)

Keely (kiwifruit192) | 1993 comments As promised, I am going to list some of the books I am perhaps planning on reading.

For the wheel on the cover, I want to read Along for the Ride by Sarah Dessen . I really hope it will count as the wheels are not fully on the cover, but they are obviously bicycles wheels. I'll probably read it regardless as I've wanted to read it for a long time.

I found House of Hollow on my library app so I'll be able to join in with that BOM. Am I correct in thinking that BOM points count as long as they are completed by the end of the challenge (and answering the DQs of course)?

There are also a few classics I'm thinking of tackling during the challenge including Middlemarch (901 pages) and Crime and Punishment (671 pages).

My library app has a great range of books so I can try and help out with specific things when it comes to it!

message 23: by Keely (new)

Keely (kiwifruit192) | 1993 comments Oh, I just saw on the tracking spreadsheet that the answer dates for the BOM are on there. We get a month, apart from the very last one.

Ignore me, I'll quietly move on now.

message 24: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 8180 comments I'm pretty sure that you do not need the entire wheel on the cover.

Thanks for the reminder of the BOMs.
For those of you who missed it in the rules, we each get points for participating in the BOMs with answering the daily questions. We get extra points for writing questions, and the DQ writers are determined by a random draw by the mods. If you want to volunteer to write DQs, go to the BOM page and list your team name and that you are willing to write questions. If you just want to participate, you can wait until the book of the month starts, or head over there now and write that you want to read the book too.
October's book that will count for wheels is House of Hollow by Krystal Sutherland , which starts on the 16th.
The Thread is here...

message 25: by M (new)

M Beal | 1700 comments Just wondering if I am the only on who has a new TBR piled somewhere for wheel. I think I have about 50 so far. Most are chosen out of being paranoid due to previous wheel challenges.

message 26: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 8180 comments I have a list on paper. I am not great at making new GR lists on the actual site, silly me.
I hope we all share good recommendations once the harder letters show up!

message 27: by Keely (new)

Keely (kiwifruit192) | 1993 comments I made a list but not a shelf on Goodreads. I have too many shelves as it is. I'm hoping I will get some older books off my general TBR list during this challenge. My TBR has too many books on it!

message 28: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 8180 comments I have been working through older titles on my TBR all year. I have made a small dent in those titles, but new ones keep mysteriously being added to the list. I blame gremlins.

message 29: by Keely (new)

Keely (kiwifruit192) | 1993 comments The same thing has been happening to me! Maybe you are right about the gremlins! I wish they wouldn't though.

message 30: by Angela (new)

Angela | 303 comments Good morning everyone! I am Angela from East TN, not to be confused with Angie also from East TN. We thought we would keep it easy for you guys this year. :)

This is my first time playing Wheel of Wheels so if you have any helpful tricks for me pass them over!

message 31: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 8180 comments Happy Sunday all!
From our proposed reading, per the sign ups, we have 65.5 books to read to meet our goal this round. We can over read without penalty up to 71 books. So, we can spell out SCARLET 10 times.
This is a team number, so if you do not personally meet your goal, someone on the team will pick you up.

If you guys have books you are planning, feel free to add them to the Tracking spreadsheet.
When you are adding books, please remember to list any other letters that the book could work for in case we need to shift things around.

Remember also that the longer the book, the better the score. That being said, read what you want to, and enjoy your books!

Only a few days until the Wheel starts-a-spinning!

Pretty sure your team is going to beat mine today sadly.

My parents lived in Buckeye and just recently moved back to PA. My mom missed the 4 seasons!

Jenny | 8180 comments I forgot we were playing each other this year!
I do hope my team wins, but life will go on if yours do. My Packers are a bit of a question mark still this year. Terrible game, great game, next game, who knows?

Afternoon games. Yuck. I prefer a morning game with my Bloody Mary.

Lol. I'm pretty sure my team proved that they're not looking to have a successful season unfortunately. Cheers to the Packers!

I lived in New Mexico a long time ago. I remember those morning games...forgot all about how that goes. Never thought to have a Bloody Mary. Good thinking!

message 38: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 8180 comments Pre-covid, I used to go to a bar near me to have breakfast, Bloody Marys and football. Stupid virus.
Yeah, sorry, I had fun watching the game yesterday. I have no problem rooting for the Steelers for the rest of the season now!

message 39: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 8180 comments Need suggestions please. I am trying to convince the mods to schedule a Back Room BOM for Wheels. We need to find a few erotica books that have a time element to go with the theme.

For those of you unfamiliar with the Back Room, it is an 18 or over chat for erotica books in NBRC. Usually, when we get one for a big challenge like this, the thread is hysterically funny.

Let me know if you have any ideas please!

message 40: by Keely (new)

Keely (kiwifruit192) | 1993 comments I've not really read much erotica, at least not any that would be long enough to count for this. So I can't really help, sorry.

I'm curious to know what people are reading before this challenge starts. I'm trying to finish Gone with the Wind but I'm only halfway through and it is a very long book. I'm going to do my best to get as close to finishing so I dont have to think about it during this challenge. I also have a couple of short books to finish, but they won't take long.
What about everyone else?

Also the copy of Middlemarch I am going to read has a carriage on so that means the first two books I am going to read have wheels on. Of course I don't want to hog all the spots so I don't mind if they are there for backup just in case. I planned to read Middlemarch more for the length than the cover anyway.

message 41: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 8180 comments I'm reading some shorter books for other challenges that won't fit here, and listening to The Cabinet of Curiosities.
I usually have several books going at once, which works unless they are all the same genre. Then I get storylines mixed up.

I started Gone with the Wind at the start of the year, got about 50 pages in, and then pretty much forgot about it for some reason. I read it years ago. Maybe I'll pick it up again after Wheel.

I am finishing up The Year of the Witching (Bethel, #1) by Alexis Henderson today. I am trying to decide if I can pick up another book and finish it before traveling on Friday. I may shoot for Finlay Donovan Is Killing It (Finlay Donovan, #1) by Elle Cosimano .

message 45: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 8180 comments I had The Only Good Indians at the top of my pile to start as well. I will wait. The only issue is to decide what to start instead. Decisions decisions.

All countries are weird in their own way!
Have fun with your family, and we will not take offense if you ignore us at the beginning of the challenge.
Make sure you eat way too much.

Upton | 522 comments Dudes! Hello! I wanted to read all your posts before jumping in so I am a bit late to the party.

I'm Christine from White Bear Lake, Minnesota (Twin Cities Area). I feel compelled to add GO Vikes!! Although we seem to suck this year (sort of every year...)

I have two, 5 year old german shepherds named Daisy Bear & Tinker. They are my favorite things! And I run a busy sports bar and restaurant. It's nice to meet all of you :)

I played the Wheel in 2018 and will watch for pointers here in the thread. I also feel compelled to re-watch Bill & Ted. Really looking forward to this challenge. Thanks.

message 50: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 8180 comments Hi Christine!
Since you are here, our team is now complete!!!!!!!

Love the doggie names. And, love the sports bar thing too. One of my favorite things to do in the whole world is watch football at a sports bar, especially one that does breakfast and has a Bloody Mary bar.
I haven't been to a bar in way too long. Soon, hopefully.
I am trying to remember if I have ever been to White Bear. Being originally from Wisconsin, I did visit the Twin Cities pretty often.

I think we should all watch Bill and Ted during Wheel at some point. I might this weekend, we'll see.
