I don't remember much but the new world/ society they ended up in was restrictive some how and they try to escape. They met up with a younger boy who is a genius and they had to save him at one point from something that was about to be done to his (mind? Brain?) It's a series of books and I think they finally escaped in the end back to their own world. The cover had the girl standing as the main focus. There was a scene where they were sent to a prison island for misfits like them and they tried to escape with a life boat.

I realize it could be in the 90s...I read it in the early 90s when I was 9 or so.
Sounds super familiar to me! I feel like I've read it.Are the brother and sister teenagers or younger children?
Do you remember anything more about the alternate dimension/world? Did they go back in time? Was there magic and fantasy, technology, animals, etc?
The sister was definitely a teenager, there's technology in the alternate world but it's all so hazy! All I remember was that the boy they encountered was much younger than they were...more 12 ish or younger while the sister was around 17.
Did it seem more geared towards middle grade, or more towards high school age readers?
