Check out Zoshchenko, he's my favorite, very much influenced by Gogol but definitely his own thing. He adopts the pose of an incompetent, somewhat dim writer, it looks easy but just try to imitate it. He was brilliant at satirizing Soviet rhetoric; he became so popular that Stalin had to do something; he (Stalin) let him live, but banned him from further publication.
