things i liked about this book the last time i read it:
- the characters!! they were all so complex and deep and i especially liked the development of the 'masks' such as elias and helene.
- HELENE!!! my gorgeous queen. i only have had one book with her so far but i am super hyped to get to spend a series with her. there's this amazing chilling super scene with helene and elias and nihi i cannot WAIT for you to get to it. your heart will die and you will be SHOOK.
- the world!! it was based on ancient roman society with plebeians and patricians (though i don't think they're actually called patricians in this book) and it was an interesting take on historical culture
things i didn't like AS much but were still passable:
- laia. she was an okay MC, but she wasn't superbly interesting or badass. but she does go on a kickass assignment which the book is based on.
- the big big baddie (or the antagonist). it was pretty guess-able but the execution was still interesting.
- the portrayal and role of women in society. i GET that it was based on ancient rome so obviously it will be patriarchal but male authority figures were so fricking piss-off-ish. and the woman baddie doesn't support women and doesn't care when girls under her care are being abused sexually and physically. that makes me so frustrated.
anyway, looking forward to this br <3

i upped my rating to 5 stars because i was feeling generous
i couldn't stop reading!! it was so addictive and chilling and towards the end it was like a trainwreck, so much was going wrong and i couldn't look away
