Bubo is brilliant. I think during our previous discussion we agreed that his name is short version of Bubonic. I would not bet on it though.
The dialog between Snuff and Bubo is highly quotable and funny. As an example:
“I’ve a friend named Graymalk who happens to be a cat. She comes around here a lot. If I think you’re planning to make mischief I’m going to let her start coming in regularly.”
“I’m not looking for trouble, damn it! Let’s keep the cat out of this!”
And yes, as William mentioned this before, poor Dr. Watson got bitten by our friend Snuff. For being too nosy I suppose.

Well, since rats are to fault for Black Death and all sorts of diseases it's pretty obvious that his name stands for Bubonic. But Will, thanks for all the info, that's really interesting!
I love this conversation between Bubo & Snuff:" 'Does this place make you nervous?'
'It's not a month for taking chances,' I said."
How delightfully creepy!

Creepy and funny. A very masterful mix.

I kind of like the Bubonic idea :) I didn't pick up on it the first time.
