NancyJ (nancyjjj) | 11286 comments I think this is going to be a hard one. I'm not sure I've ever noticed the words "sequence" or "backstory" in a first book. E.g. The Great War wasn't called World War I until World War II came along. I trust though that you have found books that had these terms.

Does information on the cover or bookjacket count?

The book doesn't actually have to be a first in a series, right? These words might fit other contexts, such as a spy's backstory.

message 3: by Nicole R (new)

Nicole R (drnicoler) | 8088 comments Hi Nancy,

Covers and book jackets do not count. The words have to be in the book itself.

And, no, the words do not have to be in a book with the tag but can be in any book.

I can still access the fly the skies one, so perhaps it changed when you updated it, if you did recently.

Book title & review: It's a Wonderful Woof
This is the latest in the Chet & Bernie mystery series. Bernie is a semi-successful private eye and Chet his canine partner. The story is always told by Chet, and his view of the world is enthusiastic and surprisingly accurate. He usually picks up on clues that the humans miss. This book is set at Christmastime and has somewhat of a related theme. It is perhaps more unrealistic than usual (hours in snow with no boots, coat or gloves, and no frostbite? not a problem for Chet but Bernie seems to be rather invulnerable.) The audio of this series is marvelously done by Jim Frangione.

This was fun! Jessica is a single mom to a second-grader and is happy alone. She's convinced by her best friend, the effervescent Fizzy, to sign up for a new genetics-based dating startup. When she learns that she's a 98% match with the company's founder, River, the two begin a public facade of dating, but things develop.

I've been listening to this on my commute, and this was definitely fun! I liked watching Jess and River's relationship develop, and the tightness of Jess and her daughter with Jess's grandparents was really sweet. I'm still a bit weirded out by the concept of a genetics-based compatibility metric (it seems like there are lots of ways that that could be done in a very very bad way), and I found the fairly-frequent references to ~algorithms~ and ~neural networks~ a little silly, but it was a fun story.

So cool you just read this too. Of course it just came out. I looked at your review and, for me, Chet's ramblings are my favorite part! I just put up with the mystery for the sake of Chet's wonderful attitude and the great "bromance" between Bernie and Chet. I only do them on audio since I find the narrator perfect.

Review: I love Nevil Shute because his characters are mostly decent people, even sometimes enemy combatants turn out to have human motives. There is a lot of innocence, even in wartime. Unfortunately, he seems to have changed his views in the nuclear age, writing On the Beach, which is the one book of his I refuse to read. This book is the story of a WWII pilot and a barmaid who fall in love. (Shute himself was an engineer and pilot and makes flying scenes exciting.)Early on, he bombs a German sub, only to find out he was mistaken and it was a British sub - or was it? The story seemed to start slowly with a fair amount of repetition and then wrap up kind of suddenly, so it didn't like it as much as some other books by this author - 3 *

Review: A romance author and a literary fiction writer end up living next door to each other during a period when each is experiencing writer's block. January has had a bad break-up and learned unbelievable info about her father, so is at a low spot emotionally also. They challenge each other to writer in the other's genre. What ensues is not just a romance but a book about discovering yourself. A look at the writing process was interesting and the banter was fun.

The Water Keeper by Charles Martin
4 stars

You can read the blurb for a more selling-point type of writing. Suffice it to say that this thriller is all from the POV of Murph Shepherd. I am not going to spoil who he actually is, but suffice it to say that he is a man who lives in an old slave church who does his best to rescue girls and women who have been taken onto flesh boats as sex slaves by various means. In this book he tries to find the daughter of a woman he meets--actually, he wanted to find her before that when she showed up at the priestless church where he lives.

He rescues a dog from the water, and then when he and the mother are heading out to search, he also rescues an elderly black ex-con who turns out to play a vital role despite his ill health.

It took me a while to get into this book--it's a thriller and so the writing is not quite the same as the other two books I've read by Martin, but still good. Definitely a 4 star experience for me in the end, despite the violence and the obviously disturbing nature of what is going on (but no graphic details about sex). As to whether or not he is successful (he has not always managed to rescue the people he tries to), you have to read the book to find out.

No Plot? No Problem!: A Low-Stress, High-Velocity Guide to Writing a Novel in 30 Days by Chris Baty
3 stars

If only I'd read the first edition of this before my one time doing a November NaNoWriMo (yes, I wrote 50K words), since it was before this edition, I wouldn't have destroyed the abysmal book I wrote--here I learned that it's supposed to be bad and what to do about it. Also, since then people like Marissa Meyer have started best sellers this way (but of course these are very few as compared with the vast number of people who do this), including Cinder and all the other books in that series written by the time this book was published.

In any vent, this is not a book on how to actually write a novel, but on how to get 50,000 words done in one month, what to expect each week, and various and sundry other things. If I ever do another NaNoWriMo, I'll be prepared.

Who this books is for--anyone who wants to do that writing challenge.

Monstress, Vol. 2: The Blood by Marjorie M. Liu

My 4.5 star review: Here we follow Maika Halfwolf and her companions Kippa and Rent as she searches for answers -- to her family's past, what is the demon inside her, and, not least, her mother - her secrets adn whether she lovedher. To get answers they take an artifact found hidden by her mother in her home in the pirate stronghold of Thyria to the mysterious Isle of Bones. Close behind are all the opposing forces trying to destroy Maika and the demon hidden inside her - or are they seeking control of the power vested in her?

Once again the artwork is stunning, and the steampunk and art deco look of this alternative history Asia from the 1900s is offset by darker alien looking demons. I did find aspects of the story hard to follow, and thus downgraded my rating slightly.

A Beautifully Foolish Endeavor - Hank Green

4 stars

A Beautifully Foolish Endeavor is the sequel to An Absolutely Remarkable Thing. I don't want to describe too much of the plot for those of you that have not read the previous book. It picks up shortly after the events at the end of the first book. This book has a lot of timely discussion about current day issues such as the power of social media and the companies that own them. This was a fun easy read that made the reader think about big issues. I really enjoy these characters, especially the strong women protagonists. I liked how the book offered plenty of social commentary without taking itself too seriously. I don't know if Green will write more books in this series, but if he does I will definitely read them.

Finlay Donovan Is Killing It - Elle Cosimano

3 1/2 stars

Finlay Donovan is a newly divorced struggling author who can barely keep it together. Bills are going unpaid, her husband is asking for full custody of her two children, and the nanny did not show up to work the day of an important meeting with her agent on the overdue book she has not started. After the meeting with her agent at a local Panera, a mysterious woman leaves her a note that could change anything...but does she dare call the number on the note.

This was a fun, quick read that kept me entertained. Finlay is a mess and it took me a while to begin to appreciate the character, but she did grow on me as the story continued. I really liked Vero, her nanny, and would have loved to read a story from her perspective. As far as the mystery goes, it was pretty straight forward and there were few surprises and I felt like everything was tied up a little too neatly at the end. Overall, it was fun read and set up a new series that has potential.

Illuminae - 3 stars

Kady and Ezra have just broken up when their planet is invaded by a mining megacorporation's forces. Evacuees from the planet of Kerenza are now aboard a group of three spaceships trying to outrun the opposing corporation's forces, who want to wipe out all evidence of and witnesses to the invasion. With a damaged/potentially deadly AI system, a mutating plague, and teenage angst, there's a lot going on here.

While I appreciated the unique way that the book was told---in a range of assorted documents/chat logs/articles/etc---I didn't absolutely love this book. The characters (especially Kady) were fairly flat. I definitely skimmed through parts of their almost caricatured teenage-y snarky chat messages, and I didn't feel super invested in anyone's story. It was definitely a quick, almost compulsively readable book, but I doubt that I'll continue with the series.

This is another fun addition to the Chet and Bernie series, set right around Christmas. One of the things I enjoy about this series are Chet's ramblings because they are so very dog-like to me, having grown up with various and sundry dogs in the house. And cats--at least our cats and dogs tended to like each other, probably because of the ages we got them.

There is a great blurb on the book page already, but suffice it to say that Bernie is asked to find another PI who he referred a possible client to after he disappears. There is murder, mayhem and lots of fun along with some perps, one or two other dogs, and some fun rides in the old Porsche

The Last Star / Rick Yancey
2 stars

This is the last book in a YA sci-fi trilogy where aliens have arrived to take over the planet and to destroy the majority of the humans (on a very broad level).

I should have reread my review for the 2nd book before grabbing the audio from the library. My review for the 2nd one specifically stated that I should NOT do the audio for the last book. Oops! Once again, there was very little to no recap for the previous books (or if there was, I missed it). Most of the characters have two names – their real name and their nickname, so it’s hard to remember who is who sometimes, especially when not fully engaged/interested in what I’m listening to. There were two different narrators, one male and one female, but more than two different viewpoints. Each chapter did say whose viewpoint it was, but because I missed things, I still had trouble knowing between the male or female characters whose POV I was hearing (combined with the multiple names and not really remembering their background because I couldn’t recall who was who…).

How Stella Learned to Talk: The Groundbreaking Story of the World's First Talking Dog by Christina Hunger - 4*

Ever since I read the Dr. Dolittle books as a kid, I have been fascinated by the idea of communicating with animals and finding out what they want to say. I did a project years ago on primates that used sign language, such as Washoe the chimp and Koko the gorilla. Christina Hunger is a speech pathologist who uses language boards and tablets to help nonverbal children communicate. When she got a new puppy, she wondered if a dog could use such a method. Starting from simple words like "outside", Stella the dog learned dozens of words and began to combine them in new ways. She and the author became instant celebrities when their story was picked up by People magazine and then multiple news outlets. It's very inspiring in its passion for communication, for all people and for other species. This is a very fast and easy read. It also includes detailed information and tips for anyone who wants to try this with their own dog.

He is quite entertaining narrating the audiobook.

State Of Terror – Hillary Rodham Clinton & Louise Penny – 3.5***
Clearly Clinton provided the behind-the-scenes information on the workings of government on this scale, while Louise Penny crafted the plot, which was fast and furious and held my attention throughout. I wish Clinton hadn’t relied so much on taking digs at # 45, because the basic plot would have worked without that, and it just makes the book seem like a thinly veiled criticism of our former leadership.
