Now that you should be getting to the end of your first book, have you looked for your next title? What books have you looked at to read? Would you recommend the book you just finished to a friend? Why or why not?

message 2: by Srikar (new)

Srikar Mandava | 3 comments Yes, I decided on reading "The Orange Code" as it is related to business/banking and seems like a topic that I may be interested in. I also wanted to branch out to some non-fiction books and try something new. I would certainly recommend the last book I read, "Code Name Verity" to a friend, as I found it very entertaining and I was able to stay interested in it throughout the entire story. It was a great twist on historical fiction and the whole plot seemed well planned out and executed.

message 3: by Kate (new)

Kate | 3 comments The next book I'm reading is "We Were Liars" by E. Lockhart. I've heard of this book a lot and it seems like something I would be interested in. I had actually planned on reading it last school year and never got to it. I wouldn't really recommend my last book to a friend. I found it kind of drawn out and overly-complicated at times, it also wasn't really my type of book.

message 4: by Hailey (new)

Hailey | 3 comments I finished my first book and have began my next novel which is "Duma Key" by Stephen King. I am only a few pages in, but I'm already so intrigued with the main character and his interesting personality. Based on just the beginning of the this novel, I would recommend it to a friend because of the odd, but interesting plot created by Stephen King.

message 5: by Noah (new)

Noah | 3 comments I finished The God of Small Things, and the next book I decided to read was The Ethics of Ambiguity by Simone de Beauvoir. Having mainly read story books, I wanted to venture into more philosophical literature. It may allow me to develop a more critical and curious mindset. In regards to my first book, I would recommend it to those who have the patience to comprehend the story that unfolds. The first few chapters seem jumbled at first, but once the characters and settings are clearly pinpointed, connections can be made through the entanglement.

message 6: by Emily (new)

Emily Facciolo | 3 comments I have already started my next book, which is "Carrie" by Stephen King. I remember watching the end of the movie when I was younger, so I know what happens at the end, but reading why Carrie is the way that she is is very intriguing. I picked this book out because I have read a couple other of his books and enjoyed them, so I thought this would be a fun fall read. I have some books that I am waiting to read when I finish this one, such as "Verity," "The Virgin Suicides," "Love and other Words," "If the Shoe Fits," and many more. I think the last book that I read was "November 9" by Colleen Hoover. I would definitely recommend this book if you like sad stories with dark pasts.

message 7: by Pratima (new)

Pratima Oulkar | 3 comments Yes, I have decided to read Nemesis by Brendan Reichs. I was looking for an interesting new book to pick up and I found this one at the school library. It is mainly about a girl who is murdered by a strange man every year on her birthday but she, hours later, wakes up in the same spot completely unscathed and alive with all the evidence of the murder erased. I have been looking to try to branch out into other genres recently, including mystery, so this seems like it could be a good book for me to read. The last book that I read was "The Girl of Fire and Thorns" and I do not recommend this book unless you are looking for a book that wraps up its plot towards the end of the book despite there being a whole series left. I remember the ending being disappointing because it wrapped up the loose ends and did not leave me on a cliffhanger that I was hoping for in order to be interested enough to read the rest of the series. The stories of the characters also did not go well with the plot and world-building that the author was trying to achieve.

message 8: by Riti (new)

Riti Gupta | 3 comments The next book I plan on reading is "Bringing Down the House: The Inside Story of Six MIT Students Who Took Vegas for Millions is" by Ben Mezrich. I have watched the movie "21" multiple times as I found the story of the students counting cards very impressive and exciting. I only recently found out that it was based on a book, so I would love to read more about the topic. I generally haven't read much non-fiction, so I also think it would be good to expand the types of books I read and analyze that style. I would recommend the book I just read, "Push," to a friend as I think it would make the reader gain perspective on common issues people face in our time. The character faces many real problems and expresses them in an explicit, powerful manner, which improves the experience of reading it.

message 9: by Aggam (new)

Aggam Khurana | 3 comments I did leave my first book the spy, I personally did not enjoy the book since it moved a little slow for me. I already started my second book it is called the Thunderhead. (Arc of Scythe #2). I really liked the first book so I decided to continue with the series. I am currently in the start so it's a little pre introductory but it's good so far, better than the spy.

message 10: by Grayson (new)

Grayson | 3 comments I have a few books in my backlog including the Lord of the Rings Series by Tolkein, the Dune series by Frank Herbert, Shogun by James Clavell, and more. However, I want to continue to read the Witcher series by Andrej Sapkowski. I have read the first two books (The Last Wish and Sword of Destiny), both of which were short stories that followed Geralt, Dandelion, and Yennefer. The story I am about to read, "Blood of Elves" is the series's first foray into long-form storytelling. I am looking to finish reading the book before the next season of the Netflix show (under the same name) is released on December 17th, as it will cover the material of Blood of Elves. As for The Road, which I finished, I cannot recommend that book to people enough. It tells a lovely--though heartbreaking--story. The father and son are portrayed so well and it is one of my favorite books ever. Please read The Road by Cormac McCarthy.

message 11: by Maura (new)

Maura Coleman | 3 comments I have begun reading my second book, titled "Things I Should Have Known". I am a few chapters in, and so far I am enjoying the book. It is a realistic fiction novel (which have always been my favorite), and I am finding the characters and their backgrounds to be quite interesting. The book I just finished, "The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes", was a good story. However, I don't think it compares to the other three novels in the series. Putting that aside, I would still recommend the book to friends because it offers a differing perspective on the world of Panem, which many have come to know and love.

message 12: by Eleyna (new)

Eleyna I finished my first book and started reading “The Unexpected Everything” by Morgan Matson. I looked at my bookshelf and picked a random book to read. That's usually how I decide what my next book will be. I have mixed feelings regarding my first book. I wouldn’t recommend “Pachinko” since it dragged on and the ending wasn’t as exciting as I anticipated. I liked the book at first, but then it got boring after a while.

message 13: by Cady (new)

Cady | 3 comments I am currently on my second book, "The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo." So far, the story has an interesting plot and the way Evelyn Hugo is characterized makes her seem more of an open book than she claims she is. From what I have read, I would recommend this book to another friend because I really enjoy they style of this book. Because it is only told from first person from Monique's point of view, it is up to the reader to discover the mysteries behind Evelyn Hugo. The next book I am planning on reading is Pride and Prejudice. Everyone raves about this saying it is one of the classics so I am excited to start that soon.

message 14: by Amanda (new)

Amanda Kent | 3 comments Yes, I am going to read "Shatter Me" next because the series as a whole has a female protagonist who goes through a mental transformation to become strong and self loving, as well as being set in a futuristic dystopian world. I am about to finish reading "From Blood and Ash" and I would maybe recommend it to another friend. I think that it was okay, but not my favorite read and a bit slow at times.

message 15: by Roha (new)

Roha Zaheer | 3 comments Yes, I decided on reading The Good Girl by Mary Kubica, I was initially drawn to this book because of the compelling summary. However, to my surprise, the story is extremely drawn out. The author is lengthening this story out unnecessarily. Other than that I would recommend it - it is a very good book and the plot idea is very interesting. I have a few titles in mind for my next read, I am leaning towards the Wasp Factory. I've read very good and promising reviews so I am excited.

message 16: by Allison (new)

Allison | 3 comments I am about finished with David and Goliath, which I probably would not recommend to someone who only likes fiction, but I would definitely recommend it to anyone who enjoys alternate books and who enjoys psychology. I believe that I would like to read Memoirs of a Geisha next as I have heard good things about it.

message 17: by Zora (new)

Zora | 3 comments I have finished my first book, A Farewell to Arms by Ernest Hemingway. I would not recommend this book unless you like being bored. Hemingway's writing style takes a while to get used to, almost like you are on a word diet. The next novel I will read is Dune by Frank Herbert. I watched the movie recently, and it interested me in reading the book. Several science fiction fans have recommended this book to me as well.

message 18: by Jared (new)

Jared Park | 3 comments I am now looking forward to reading The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt next because I really enjoyed The Secret History, which was also written by Tartt. The Secret History is great for any fans of mystery, crime, and exploring the complex relationships between young, naive people. I would definitely recommend this book to any friend, but especially those who are just as intrigued as me by those specific categories of literature.

message 19: by Shaan (new)

Shaan Parikh | 3 comments Yes, I am going to read the fault in our stars. The book I just finished, "Invincible" is a book that I would definitely recommend. At first glance, you might just think it is a story about some dude who joined a football team and is now really good but in reality, it is so much more than sports. It's a book that many people can relate to and learn from, not just athletes.

message 20: by Ashley (last edited Nov 17, 2021 11:27AM) (new)

Ashley Woods | 3 comments Yes, I just finished my last book "Americanah" by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie a couple of weeks ago. I would definitely recommend this book as it gives the reader a unique insight into how culture plays a role in one's personal feelings towards another. It also discusses important topics of discrimination and injustice which I feel are very relevant today. I found myself really connected with the characters despite our very different backgrounds. The book I am reading next is "Looking For Alaska" by John Green because I love him as an author and I have yet to read it even though it has been recommended to me before.

message 21: by Carissa (new)

Carissa Preston | 3 comments I have finished my first book, Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes the classics. It's one of those books that you get satisfaction from the more you read it because you understand it more with every read. I was originally going to read another book by the Bronte sisters, which was Villette by Charlotte Bronte, but that one was a little long. Instead, I've decided that my next novel will be Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen.

message 22: by katherine (new)

katherine | 3 comments I finished The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt and I really liked the writing and even though it was a bit lengthy, it maintained my interest throughout. I would definitely recommend it to a friend. I am moving on to my next book, The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini. It has been on my list to read for a long time, and my friends who have read it gave it good reviews.

message 23: by Lizzy (new)

Lizzy Qian | 3 comments The next book that I am planning to read is Guns, Germs, and Steel by Jared Diamond. I tried to read this book when it was recommended to me in 8th grade, but I found it too dense to get through at the time. I would recommend the book I finished, Islands of Mercy, because I really enjoyed it. The imagery and commentary on 19th century feminism were really interesting.

message 24: by Anagha (new)

Anagha (iguananagha) | 3 comments I have been searching for some new books recently. The Murderbot Series seems interesting, so I may start reading those. The last book I read was If We Were Villains. I would recommend it as an introduction to the genre of dark academia. It combines classic elements of the genre with true crime mystery and theater, creating a riveting read. References to play I have previously read added even more symbolism to the story. However, it does bear a close resemblance to another dark academia book Secret History, enough to warrant some eyebrow-raising. To those who have read Secret History, If We Were Villains is mostly repetition.

message 25: by Grace (new)

Grace Kieffer | 3 comments I finished the Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde, and I would definitely recommend this if you are into homoerotic themes, philosophy, and profound descriptions. It displays an interesting relationship between the good and evil of mankind. I have looked at many books, but one that has caught my eye is Dune by Frank Herbert, because it has been highly reviewed in the new film adaptation. I haven’t watched the movie yet because I like to read the book before the movie, so I will read it next.

message 26: by Samir (last edited Nov 18, 2021 10:16AM) (new)

Samir Rana | 3 comments I just recently finished the book, "The Guilt Trip," by Sandi Jones. I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a good action-packed novel. The entirety of the story is captivating and has kept me on the edge of my seat since the start. I have looked for new books and I decided to settle on reading "The Martian," by Andy Weir.

message 27: by Maya (new)

Maya | 3 comments For my next book I am reading "Tweak". I tend to enjoy books about psychological issues which drug use normally relates to. "Tweak" is the story of a man that grew up doing meth and his process of recovery. I would recommend "Confessions of a Sociopath" to a friend because it did a great job of building suspense and making the reader think about the people around them. I started questioning if people in my own life are sociopaths.

message 28: by Evan Lainoff (new)

Evan Lainoff | 3 comments Yes, my next book is 5 Little Pigs by Agatha Christie. I would recommend the book I read, Sharp Objects, because it was very entertaining and had many twists. It is also a miniseries that you can watch after reading the book to enhance your enjoyment of the piece. It was written by the same author who wrote Gone Girl so if you liked that you may enjoy this.

message 29: by Patrick (new)

Patrick Li | 3 comments I am now in the middle of reading The Godfather by Mario Puzo. I've always wondered how large groups like the Mafia and the Cosa Nostra survived and prospered. I hope that the book will be not only entertaining but informative of the dynamics in these groups.
I would say that Moby Dick is a book not everyone would want to read. It's long, but not as exciting as some people might think it is. It has a great deal of philosophy and influence from Shakespeare. I do think that Captain Ahab is interesting to read about whenever he appears.

message 30: by Nimi (new)

Nimi Shoyinka | 3 comments I will be reading Percy Jackson and the Sea of Monsters by Rick Riordan as my next book. Throughout this year, I would like to start or finish reading book series that I looked forward to but didn't get to read during high school and late middle school.

The book that I recently finished, Children of Blood and Bone by Tomi Adeyemi, was very well written, packed with action, and fantasy. Multiple aspects of the novel are inspired by my culture so I frequently felt a sense of connectivity to it. I would definitely recommend it to those who like adventure novels and enjoy learning about different cultures.

message 31: by Alex (new)

Alex Maillie | 3 comments I think I’ll probably read The Sound and the Fury next. The book I previously read was East of Eden by John Steinbeck. I enjoyed the book and would recommend it for its realistic characters and conflicts.

I’ve been meaning to read either The Sound and the Fury or Absalom, Absalom! as many people consider William Faulkner to be the greatest American author. I decided on the The Sound and the Fury because of the multiple different styles within the book.

message 32: by Ujjwala (new)

Ujjwala P. | 3 comments Not sure yet, but I think that I might read the One of Us is Lying. The book I just finished was A Good Girl's Guide to Murder. I would definitely recommend this book because this book has an incredible plot twist and the buildup of suspense is great. Also, this is a great book to read if one is considering a interesting mystery story as I enjoyed reading this.

message 33: by Ryan (new)

Ryan Nagengast | 3 comments I have looked for my next title, and I will be reading “Paper Towns” by John Green. After finishing a non-fiction book, I wanted to read a fiction one, so naturally I chose “Paper Towns”. I would recommend “Outliers” by Malcolm Gladwell to a friend. The book was very interesting, and it changed my outlook on life. The stories told are important in telling the tale of success, and the book reveals the true factors of success.

message 34: by Sanjana (new)

Sanjana | 3 comments I have looked for my next title, I will be reading Kingdom of the Cursed by Kerri Maniscalco. I have also looked at to read Where Dreams Descend and Once Upon a Broken Heart. I will read these books after Kingdom of the Cursed. I would definitely recommend my previous book, Shadow in the Ember. Anyone who loves to read science fiction/fantasy will enjoy the plot development and character interactions.

message 35: by Dhruv (new)

Dhruv Lapaasi | 3 comments I want to read "Eragon" and then possibly follow the rest of the books in the series. It's been years since I read Eragon and I never finished the series, so I think this is long overdue. I am also interested in reading a fantasy story and I remember "Eragon" being one of the best fantasies I've ever read. I am not done "Ready Player One" yet, but I would recommend it as the concept of the story is very interesting and unique.

message 36: by Jenna (new)

Jenna Graham | 3 comments My book is actually the first of a series so I already have the next 6 books planned out for me. The second book in the series is called "The Da Vinci Code" and follows the same main character as my first book. I would recommend the book "Angels and Demons" to a friend if they like intense mystery books that will keep them wanting to learn more. I think that this book was very intriguing and the concepts included in the story as well as the overall plot made me not want to stop reading.

message 37: by Jake (new)

Jake Maillie | 3 comments I have just finished reading my second book 12 the Inside Story of Tom Brady's fight for Redemption. I would recommend it because it delves into the actions of the greatest athlete of all time and how he overcame adversity to succeed on the world stage. Personally it was very interesting for me and detailed how he got to have almost a second career after the age of thirty seven. When reading I began planning to go outside sports, but planned on sticking in my comfort zone of biographies. I ended up following this plan and am now reading about Joseph Smith.

message 38: by Manya (new)

Manya Ajith | 3 comments The next book I am reading is "Hello, Goodbye, and Everything in Between" by Jennifer E. Smith. I will admit that I have not read this genre in a while, but I am open to trying. The book I finished was "Loneliest Girl in the Universe", and I would definitely recommend the book to others. There were lots of twists that made me want to keep reading.

message 39: by Debbie (new)

Debbie | 3 comments I finished my first book, Dune, by Frank Herbert. I enjoyed it a lot and I think I will read more books from the science fiction genre. I would definitely recommend this book to other people, and I suggest going into it completely blind as I did. I am planning on reading "Brave New World" next, which is a book that is usually referenced alongside 1984 as being the pioneer books of the dystopian genre. I am interested in discovering what kind of political commentary will be imbedded in this novel.

message 40: by Aadarsh (new)

Aadarsh | 3 comments The next book I'm reading is called "Solids and Surfaces: A Chemist's View of Bonding in Extended Structures". It's (obviously) an informative book. I find it interesting that the premise of the book is that physicists are far more familiar with extended solid bonding than are chemists - the entire purpose of the book is to explain bonding (something familiar to physicists) to chemists. It's from 1988, and I wonder whether the breadth of different academic fields was much more different back then. I mean, I would assume that currently, it is the chemist (or materials scientist) - not the physicist - who has complete dominion over bonding, regardless of what sort of structure said bonding is within.

message 41: by Varshita (new)

Varshita | 3 comments I have finished reading A Thousand Splendid Suns. I loved the book. I think It is my top 5 books of all time. I would definitely recommend this book to a friend. There was a lot going on in this book. The book began with the story of Mariam and then the story of Laila and then when the story of when they crossed paths. The setting of the story in Afghanistan has added a lot of tragedy and substance to the book. I plan on reading more of Hosseini's work. I have found and started reading my next book. The book is called The Boy in the Striped Pajamas by John Boyne. I decided to read this book because this was the first book recommended to me by a random book generator.

message 42: by Joey (new)

Joey Powers | 3 comments I have looked for another book, I am really excited to start reading A Confederacy of Dunces because one of our AP Classroom assignments had an excerpt from it and I really enjoyed reading that excerpt. I would recommend the Grapes of Wrath because it really is such a classic and a super interesting and different read.

message 43: by Mika (new)

Mika Dela Cruz | 3 comments I am planning on reading The Secret History by Donna Tartt next because I've heard good reviews from friends and others. I haven't read a murder mystery book in a long time so I am looking forward to playing detective while reading. I would recommend my last book, A Little Life by Hanya Yanagihara, to anyone interested in a serious read. I would advise against it for people that are sensitive to topics regarding depression and suicide. Otherwise, I enjoyed it despite how emotional it made me.
