Janice (jamasc) | 60289 comments Help/Discussion: Site 5, The Big Nickle, Sudbury, Ontario, Canada

1. Location: Ontario is the home of the capital city of Canada, Ottawa.
Read a book set in Canada or is written by a Canadian author.

2. About: The Canadian Nickle represents 5 cents in Canadian currency.
Read a book that is one of 5 in a series.

3. Souvenir: An uncirculated minted nichol is a collector's item.
Read a book with Collect, Collector, or Collection in the title.

Christina ❤️M❤️ (christir1159) | 1 comments Is 1 of 5 meaning the first of the series or just one of the five? Sorry, I am starting early.

message 3: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60289 comments Just one of the 5. I would have worded it "read the first book in a series with 5 books" if that was the requirement.

Dawn (caveatlector) | 1802 comments Has anyone gophered books for Collect, Collector or Collection?? Having a hard time finding something I want to read for this one.

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Dawn - The only thing I came up with is The Perfume Collector. It has a woman in a red coat and red heels on the cover. It is set in London and Paris according to my book list for books that I own and that I keep notes on. I didn’t look any farther.

I think I'll read a middle grade book that my library has - The Collectors.

I've had The Bone Collector on my wishlist for a while. I remember the movie and have wanted to read the book ever since, just never got to it.

Christina ❤️M❤️ (christir1159) | 1 comments I hope Collections will be considered as long as it is in the name?

message 10: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60289 comments Collection is one of the specified words.

message 11: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (caveatlector) | 1802 comments Thank you, these ideas took me off book hunting and I think I found something.

message 12: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (caveatlector) | 1802 comments Janice, can these be plural?? Like say 'Collectors'??

message 13: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60289 comments Plurals are addressed in the rules. But yes.

message 14: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19437 comments I recently read The Orphan Collector, which was good. I also have The Button Collector on my TBR.

message 15: by Odette (new)

Odette (odman) | 997 comments With the series of 5, does it have to be a completed series (quintet)? Or is a series allowed with only 5 published at present but maybe with more to come.

message 16: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I think as long as there are only 5 published, it's fine. No matter how many are still planned. I think there's something about this in the general challenge rules but I'm not sure.

Be careful though! Last year I saved such a series task for the end of the year, but by that time another book had been published so I couldn't use the book I planned for it anymore :(

message 17: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60289 comments I thought I had written it into the rules, but I guess I missed it. We count only the published books. Peggy is absolutely correct about the caution.

message 18: by Odette (new)

Odette (odman) | 997 comments Thanks, Janice. I am thinking about Dishonour and Obey, third book in a series of 5. Other series I have started seem to have either less books or more.

message 19: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60289 comments So far, it doesn't have any placeholders for a 6th book. I see I have the first book on my wishlist.

message 20: by Leslie (new)

Leslie | 600 comments Cathy Ace was born and raised in Wales, but migrated to Vancouver where she now lives. Could she be considered a Canadian Author? She is the chairperson of Crime Writers of Canada if that helps :)

She would be considered a Canadian author.

Would ay of the following books work for this task?

Thanks.

Viji - it's obvious from the book blurbs that they would. You don't need to ask for rulings on something so obvious.

I was not sure what exactly is needed for this task - especially in the case of historical fiction. Thanks, for the help.

message 25: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60289 comments Why would historical fiction present a problem? If the story is about an immigrant and their experiences as a result of immigration, it doesn't matter the genre.

message 32: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19437 comments Anyone have thoughts for a good series of five works? Something you'd like to recommend?

I'm thinking about using this for my 2nd badge, but the series I was planning to use has a 6th book coming out in August and I don't think I'll be ready for this one before that publishes. All of my current top series have more or less books in the series.

I don't read too much sci-fi or fantasy, though I'm not opposed to it so it's not a deal breaker if it's good. I tend to read a lot more in the mystery/thriller and historical fiction genres.

message 33: by Katrisa (new)

Katrisa | 4528 comments I was about to come recommend the Truly Devious series as I am three books into that one and it is an engaging YA mystery series, but (to my chagrin for my own reading plans as well) the 5th book won't be published until later this year :(

The only other 5 book series I have in my tracking notebook are the Mary Stewart Arthurian series which starts with The Crystal Cave - which reads more like an historical fiction with slight bits of magic than a true fantasy but is also kinda long if it's not up your alley. Or there is a YA series that is a pleasant enough quick read series called The Ascendance by Jennifer A. Nielsen which starts with The False Prince. It's nothing life changing or anything, but was enjoyable enough that I continued the series.

There is Scotland Yard's Murder Squad I haven't read them all, but they're quite enjoyable if you like historical mysteries.

Did you finish Stillhouse Lake? I read the first book of that series for that task.

There is Artifact Hunters but it's more romance than anything in my opinion. But it's got a bit of steampunk in it. I've read a couple of them but would like to continue the series.

I confirm Peggy's comment.

message 36: by Katrisa (new)

Katrisa | 4528 comments If you want to do stillhouse lake Kristie make sure and do it soon as it will only be a 5 book series for about another month! I am going to add that one to my TBR.

message 37: by Lanelle (new)

Lanelle | 4069 comments Kristie wrote: "Anyone have thoughts for a good series of five works? Something you'd like to recommend?"

I'll probably read one of Charlaine Harris' Lily Bard mysteries (book #1 Shakespeare's Landlord), or one of Jessica Day George's Castle Glower childrens fantasy/adventure (book #1 Tuesdays at the Castle) books for this task.

What? There are going to be more books? I thought that was the end of the series when she died.

message 39: by Katrisa (new)

Katrisa | 4528 comments According to GR there is one more book coming out in August that has a second author listed. I just finished a good mystery/thriller series so I'm looking for a new one.

I thought this might actually work in my favor because I need to finish the badge I'm working on first, so waiting to read this last could work out. But, then I checked on the date and its expected publication is Dec 27th, which is cutting it too close for me. Bummer!

message 41: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19437 comments Yup, looks like the next one is Trapper Road authored by Rachel Caine & Carrie Ryan. Interestingly, the publisher is listed as Rachel Caine, LLC.. I guess Ryan will be taking over the series.

message 42: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19437 comments I have both Scotland Yard's Murder Squad and Artifact Hunters on my TBR. It looks like Artifact Hunters has 6 works though. I may start with The Yard. I didn't know that was a 5 book series. :) I'm going to look into the other suggestions too though. Thank you all!

I think I will quit after the 5th book. I have them all.

If you went with Stillhouse Lake series for this task, you'd need to read it this month since the 6th book will be published Aug 2.

Oops, I had better update my series tracker. I try to do that when I roll over to a new year. Obviously I didn't catch Arifact Hunters for 2 years since book 6 was published in 2020.

Kristie | 19437 comments Yes, I’m not planning to read for a while so that one won’t work for me.

message 49: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60289 comments It's tricky. I'm just glad I have that task finished and reported.

message 50: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19437 comments Fortunately, it’s not a big deal. I added a couple of the other suggestions to my options.
