I haven't read this one yet, either, but I finally got my copy today!

I was surprised at how much I loved this one! The illustrations are great and having played world of warcraft I loved the virtual "setting" and the message about morality online not being as clear cut as it seems.
I didn't love this book. I'm not a gamer, but I really liked Doctorow's 2010 (non-graphic) novel For the Win, which covers the same ground--gaming, economics, exploitation of workers--but in much more depth. If I hadn't read For the Win, I might have liked this more--but with that perspective, the characters and plotline felt under-developed. Still, I'll recommend it to my teen graphic novel readers--the art is fantastic.
I really really loved the artwork in "In Real Life" - especially the similarities/differences between Anda and her virtual counterpart. Like how she dyes her hair to match, which was a great unspoken way to show that she is feeling more empowered! But I agree with Justine that it was an underdeveloped plot. It seemed to me like a simplistic take on worker's rights. Her friend lost his job but then bam, he got another one! I think that's a little unrealistic. While it was a fascinating idea to explore online games and morality, it all got tied up a little too neatly for me.
What a great graphic novel! When you combine a great storyline that incorporates teaching life lessons and is still a fun book, you can't go wrong. I'm going to add this to my collection immediately. P.S. You must read the introduction to full appreciate the purpose of this book.
I liked the book, but I can see where some have thought it was too easily wrapped up. I do think it is a good introduction to the gaming and morality that will give students a taste on the subject and then perhaps they will think more about the subject. I have not read For the Win - I'll have to check it out.
