It seems that the police had already written off the case as there wasn't enough evidence to convict Nick in their opinion. Even though they didn't like it, it seemed that their hands were tied It touched Tracy personally and she came at it in a different way in wanting to get to know the victim through her family's eyes.

I agree with Lisa. It looks like the police did everything they could under the law. Tracy decided to fight Nick's PR campaign. Nick's exes wouldn't talk to the police, but she found a way to get them to open up. Even if the police couldn't use what they said, she could use the information to show the public the real Nick.

A lot of what Tracy found could not be used by the police or the prosecution. Nick's former girlfriend wouldn't come forward, so that was out. Trisha's long list of injuries couldn't be put in as evidence because she always insisted that she fell, ran into a door, etc. The police probably had the info but couldn't do anything with it. Tracy getting the hospital report from the Italian doctor was the best piece of evidence that she found because Trisha told the doctor the truth.

The good thing is the police couldn't use the evidence, but Tracy could use it to write her stories.
Tracy was able to approach the family in more of a personal matter because she is a reporter, who is planning to write feature stories rather than news.

The family was much more comfortable talking about Trisha to Tracy because she asked. Nick’s exes wouldn’t talk to the police out of fear and if they had shared what they knew, I believe they could be compelled to testify. They opened up to Tracy and led her to new paths. The evidence from the Italian doctor is definitely going to be used in court. Trisha admitted to the caregivers that she’d been beaten and thrown down the stairs. No one else had pictures to corroborate their speculation.
