Almost every movie has violence. Almost every movie has dirty jokes and obscene references. It's really sad.
So here's the question: how much is too much? How much violence can you/do you watch? How much kissing/sex/other not okay things do you consume?
I believe that violence, so long as it's not in excess, is okay for me personally to watch. It doesn't give me nightmares, but it reminds me how broken the world is and how Christians need to be the light of the world.
However, things like sex are out. I don't care. I'll watch movies if they don't go overboard, but I'll hate the movie because of it. Kissing isn't a huge problem for me as long as it's not in excess.
Language though. Language doesn't bother me as long as I don't speak it. How about y'all?

Book - Dragon Same. Kissing doesn't bother me and neither does violence, but sex? Yeah I'm not going to watch a movie with that in it. Language makes me cringe, but I don't watch a lot movies with language in them anyway.

Gotcha. How do you define language?
If we're talking little "bad words" such as crap and heck, I don't have a huge problem with those. Legitimate "official bad words" make me cringe, and people using the name of Jesus and God as a curse word makes me sick.

message 4: by Book - Dragon (new)

Book - Dragon Using God's name in vain is something I hate. To me bad words are the alternate version of shoot, that word that is used to describe girls that starts with a b, and the word that starts with f. Unfortunately I know these word because of a book I read.

E (musicean) @Book both those bother me lol

In terms of movies and shows, I actually don't have a TV to watch and I don't care to watch. I'll watch a movie every now and then (watched Cinderella '21 a week or so ago). But really, I don't find it edifying so I do my best not to watch. I think the biggest turn off for me in watching anything is that (at least US wise) it's [mostly] controlled by Hollywood. What comes out is what they want to promote. Unless it's something like "The David Movie", which is independently made and doesn't have Hollywood's grip on it, I would just rather not watch at all.

I think it boils down to "How much can I watch until it starts affecting (desensitizing) me?". When I hard-core binged movies, I noticed things that used to bother me didn't as much anymore (sex/violence/language/etc). For me, I am terrible at temperance so if I watch one movie I'll binge 30 (that increasingly became worse and worse). So, for me one movie at all tends to be too much.

I can understand that. I definitely don't struggle with desensitization, as if anything, the more I watch something bad, the more it bothers me. I'm also not a huge TV person. I much prefer making movies rather than watching them! :) I like to watch them when I need a mindless activity to chill after a long day and I have a headache so reading isn't in the realm of possibility, but then I start analyzing the worldview and debating it with myself, so that's great...

message 9: by Book - Dragon (new)

Book - Dragon I love doing movie nights with my family and I watch movies with my siblings sometimes. Other than that and a couple episodes of G rated shows I like, I don't watch a ton of TV. I usually play this role playing Harry Potter game I like and I play on our wii. I also watch on YouTube, but I'm careful. I like The Dodo (a YouTube channel about people who rescue sick and injured animals) and Studio C (another YouTube channel that a group of friends started. They do hilarious and clean sketch comedy)

STUDIO C IS MY LIFE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Actually, that's a major overstatement. I'll watch one of their videos, like, once a month. But they're SO FUNNY!!!!!!!!

Book - Dragon I KNOW!!!!! I love the one when Mallory is a pregnant spy named Lady Shadow and the one where they redid the Council of Elrond.
They did quite a few LOTR ones.

Ok. Fighting and kissing doesn't really bother me. Unless the fighting gets super gorey. That's way too far. Like guts, beheading and they don't move the camera so you actually do see the head come off. Heads in a basket etc. I think kissing is fine, but if they get in a bed, or like shove each other onto something or start ripping off clothes thats way to far.

message 14: by Fortissimo (new)

Fortissimo (kendra_simps) Violence is not a problem to me, and language and kissing really doesn't affect me either. I'd rather not watch any sex scenes, but if they aren't too detailed then I'll continue.

Same.

a v a (httpswwwpinterestcomdoubleaa373) | 3 comments Um for me, I don't like violence if it's visible - if you know what i mean. If it's gory and bloody, count me out, but if it's just like a fight or a little blood, I'm good. I've watched movies like LOTR and Pirates of the Caribbean, and they're pretty violent but not too violent.

As for "romance", I'm fine with kissing, as long as it's JUST a kiss. Anything further than that is a no for me. I just don't like all that lovey dovey stuff in movies. In books I can handle a little more romance bc you're not actually seeing it, but ofc nothing inappropriate. Modesty people, modesty. As a Christian that's very important.

So yeahhhhh......

Agreed Ava. I think my tolerance to violence is higher because of my creepy obsession with weapons. It also depends on the type of violence. Modern violence? Count me out. Medieval war violence? Well, those are mainly the only movies I watch...

And sex scenes are out. Gone. Thrown out the window. I HATE them. Which is why I love LotR so much is that there's absolutely nothing like that and it's amazing!!!!

“How much is too much?” Hmm… so it depends whether it’s a book or a movie. I think content in movies is worse, since you are actually seeing those images/hearing those words instead of just your imagination. 🤷‍♀️

As long as it’s not excessively detailed, violence doesn’t bother me that much in books. Also, I can usually skim over language unless there’s a ton. The books I have to be most careful of are ones with sensual stuff; obviously I’m not going to read books with sex scenes or whatever, but ones that have some iffy things in them but are good otherwise are the hardest to know whether to DNF or keep going. If it’s causing me to think inappropriate thoughts then I need to DNF.

Movies affect me a lot more, but I don’t watch that many of them. I hate hearing bad language all the time at school so I try to avoid it when I can.
