Or if you’d like to use this challenge to read multiple books published from each decade, you can do that too! This is your time to read through time as you see fit!

2. Whenever you finish a book for the challenge, post here and let the challenge leader know so they can update your progress. Please be sure to post the number of books you have completed and the number of your original message every time you post an update.
The challenge leader is not able to keep track of your total number of books for you because of the number of participants in the challenge. The number of the original post is used to identify you, as there can be many members with the same name. The challenge leader will not look at this post to track your progress.

Planning post

In the 1980's you list the USA as an Olympics host country - which it was in 1984. But that was a boycotted Olympics.

So why do you not also include Russia as an Olympics Country in 1980? That too was also a boycotted Olympics.

You also include Canada for 1976 and I'm pretty sure that the Montreal Games were boycotted as well.

That is simply not fair - to have 2 western countries that were boycotted but not the communist country that was also boycotted.

You cannot still be afraid of communism, surely? After all, you also have China listed for 2008 and that is still a communist country.

No boycott information was included in the resource list we used, so I'll give SarahKat the benefit of the doubt that Soviet Union as a 1980 host country was omitted in error. Her inclusion of China for both 2008 and 2022 seems to indicate that it wasn't a deliberate slight over communism.

Thank you, Robynne, for bringing this to our attention. I'll be glad to send a private message to let SarahKat know about the mistake. Meanwhile, feel free to seek out a book for 2022 with a Soviet Union setting for the 1980's decade.

Robynne, the Soviet Union omission definitely was not a political concern or anything. I just went down a list and added the countries that are still around. A handful of others were omitted simply because I figured it would be easier to find books from the current countries (instead of having to look up territories and whatnot). Soviet Union is now added.

Regarding updates, I usually do them weekly and I had updated Monday morning. I'll do another tomorrow. I do not check this thread daily. Apologies for the wait!

I was wondering why the 1984 Winter Olympics in Sarajevo, Yugoslavia were not included. Of course, Sarajevo is now in Bosnia and Herzegovina since Yugoslavia no longer exists. And don't worry -- I didn't think you had any political concern about it. I thought it was just an accidental omission. Whether or not you decide to add it doesn't matter to me. I've already found a USA book for that prompt! :-)

I do, however, have a question about prompt #4 in the 2010's. Does an "Arab" author mean Saudi Arabian or will any country in the Middle East be OK?

Oh, also I have changed my goal from 28 books to 70 books. This is for message #10. Thanks!

Welcome everyone!! So excited to read through time with you all!

A book set in the Soviet Union, and not modern Russia. I also assume this means that any books set before the October Revolution does not count either. Which means anything about the Romanovs is also out!! Now thats definitely going to be a challenge.... LOL
