Jay Gertzman | 272 comments _Brotherly Love_ is one of the best novels about Philly. Its title refers to Peter Flood's motivation, so deep in his soul that he is not aware of it. Forgiveness is that need. That, and ties to a father "disappeared" by his South Philly extended family. He lives his life loyal to that crime family, silent, unattached, often in pain from jumping from roofs or taking beatings by sparing partners. He never misses a day of work as a roofer with ties to the corrupt Union, which his extended family controls. He never escapes them.
Dexter's voice, omniscient, is like the cold eye of God, telling the story without judgement, inviting you to do so. The tale is told in the present tense. "The child [Peter’s sister], ... floating toward him through the air."
