Patricia | 1168 comments Finished my first--#22 A book from a series. A Midsummer's Equation (#3 Detective Galileo). This is my second read from this series. Greatly enjoyed both. This series has been translated from the Japanese, but not in order of how they were written. This is listed as the sixth book in some places and the third in others. I don't think the first two have been translated.

I like Japanese mysteries, too.

Patricia | 1168 comments I think (maybe) this is the sixth in the series but the third to be translated in English. Just to be totally clear. lol

Patricia | 1168 comments My second from this challenge #24: The Secret, Book & Scone Society A cozy mystery set in North Carolina. Finished 1/30; 3 stars

Patricia | 1168 comments For the third prompt, a book about book clubs, book stores, libraries: The Cat Who Saved Books. Japanese, magical realism. A boy in high school, Rintaro, loses his grandfather who raised him and owned a bookstore. Known as a hikikomori (the Japanese have such great words), one who avoids social contact, Rintaro is surprised when two friends from school begin coming to the bookstore to check up on him. He's even more surprised when a talking cat shows up to tell him he needs his help to save some books. A charming book about friendship, books, and coming of age.

Patricia | 1168 comments Eighth prompt- a book with a different culture. The Henna Artist finished 2/6; 3 stars

message 9: by Patricia (new)

Patricia | 1168 comments A book about someone who is dead (#9) The Aunt Who Wouldn't Die finished 2/15; 2 stars

This is pretty short or I probably wouldn't have finished it. I found it a bit confusing. Then just when I thought I figured out what was going on & who was who, it was over. I listened to the audio and found the voice of the narrator a bit annoying, so that didn't help.

I listened to it, coming away with a similar impression.

I wondered if it was just me as there are quite a few good reviews for this. Maybe not for the audio though.

Patricia | 1168 comments Light-hearted or fun book (#13) This Time Next Year. Finished 2/23; 4 stars.
I enjoyed this British romance. Though I'm putting it in a "light-hearted" category, there are, of course, problems to be solved and relationships to work out.

Patricia | 1168 comments Book that takes place in New York, New Mexico, New Jersey or New Hampshire--Murder at the 42nd Street Library. This takes place in New York. First in a series. Read this for a library group. I didn't totally warm to this book. Probably wouldn't have finished if it hadn't been for the group. Several felt the same way though one person loved it from start to finish. That's the fun of discussing in groups. Rare for everyone to like or hate the same book.

Patricia | 1168 comments I was looking at my books the other day, trying to decide if an orange spine was enough for #26 A Book with an Orange Cover. Then saw a book lying on the table (among many other books) that I was almost finished with. The cover is very orange! So, just finished God of All Things: Rediscovering the Sacred in an Everyday World. Wonderful book describing every day objects and parts of nature--from rainbows to donkeys to viruses--and what they teach us about God.
God of All Things Rediscovering the Sacred in an Everyday World by Andrew Wilson

Patricia | 1168 comments I finished two more for this challenge. #23 A book with a number in its title: A Honeybee Heart Has Five Openings.

#15 A book written by an author who uses initials: Where Shadows Dance by C.S. Harris

message 16: by Patricia (new)

Patricia | 1168 comments For prompt #10 A genre I don't usually read: Tidesong, a middle-grade, graphic novel.
I haven't read many graphic novels, so I looked for a few recommendations & started with this one. A young girl is sent to her aunt's house to go to a school for magic. She's not always the most obedient and certainly not the most patient. When her magic becomes entangled with a sea dragon's, she has to learn several lessons the hard way.

Patricia | 1168 comments #14 A book about betrayal: The Art of Betrayal. finished 3/25; 4 stars

message 18: by Patricia (new)

Patricia | 1168 comments #17 A book from bottom of TBR. I could have chosen many, I'm sure, but I went with Under Heaven. This one had a receipt from Borders in it, so, yeah, I've had it awhile. If you like historical fiction (Tang Dynasty, 8th century China) with a bit of fantasy in it, Guy Gavriel Kay is one of the best. Haven't read any of his books in several years, so have some catching up to do. 4 stars

Patricia | 1168 comments I've finished 14 prompts.
For #6 A lesser known book written by any author: Human Croquet. Atkinson's humor and strange twists are present in this book, but definitely not as good as some others. But, glad I read it.

I thought the same. Glad I read it. She's quite a unique author.

Yes, she is! Glad I have several more books to read.

message 22: by Patricia (new)

Patricia | 1168 comments For prompt #19 A book I picked up at the library--The Patron Saint of Second Chances. This is a cute, light-hearted book about a man in a small village in Italy who finds out the plumbing in their village is about to totally give out, so he goes to extreme measures to try and raise the money to save the village--without telling anyone what's going on. 3 stars

message 23: by Patricia (new)

Patricia | 1168 comments I finished my 17th for the challenge--prompt #18 A highly anticipated book: The Younger Wife. I love Sally Hepworth. The suspense & her always dysfunctional characters (her words & several others) make for entertaining, in a crazy sort of way, reading. This wasn't my favorite (still The Mother-in-Law), but still 4 stars.

message 24: by Patricia (new)

Patricia | 1168 comments For #11 Read two books by same author, I read 2 by William Kent Krueger. In April, I read This Tender Land & a few days ago, I finished Boundary Waters.

message 25: by Patricia (new)

Patricia | 1168 comments Finished 2 more. Up to 23 now, so should be able to finish pretty soon.
#1) A book received as a gift: King Leopold's Ghost
#21) A book that begins with a W: Wild Fire

message 26: by Patricia (new)

Patricia | 1168 comments #20 book I bought or borrowed without reading the inside blurb
The Painted Veil; finished 8/4
I bought this on Kindle because it was .99 and I've read other books by this author I liked. I really had no idea what it was about.

message 27: by Patricia (new)

Patricia | 1168 comments I've been thinking I needed to read one more book to complete this challenge, then was reminded I only needed to read 25. But, also, I read Death on the Nile back in April, so I added that for #4 and have read for all 26. Yea!
