1st Annual Challenge
I love all your challenges, Martha. You should have plenty to read. It took me a long time to read Team of Rivals also, but it was one of my favorite books of 2021. Wait until you're in the mood for it. :-)I have read and enjoyed The Sweet Potato Queens' Book of Love, Sense and Sensibility, Mansfield Park, The Disappearing Spoon, The Historian, Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet, Gilead, The Fellowship of the Ring, Living History, Library of Souls, Rosemary: the Hidden Kennedy Daughter, Little House on the Prairie, Anne of Windy Poplars, A Man Called Ove, The Five, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, Becoming, Ready Player One, Mrs. de Winter, Prince Caspian, and The Voyage of Dawn Treader. So many good books ahead of you, no matter what you're in the mood to read.
Three of the books on your lists narrowly missed mine this year: Career of Evil, Homegoing and My Autobiography (Twain). It's so hard cutting books from the list and as soon as I do, they are really the only books I want to read. Typical, right? :-)
Looking forward to seeing what you think of your books, Martha!!
Love your challenges. I need to be more dedicated and organized about finishing older items on my TBR. Happy Reading 💖📚💖

Thanks, Alissa & Ben! I don't remember where the idea came from for concentrating on books from my tbr, but I've continued it because it helps me focus. I do try to add as many books as I own already, but it's not always possible. I am trying to buy fewer books and read more, but it's not easy. :-)

I've always thought this is why I never get bored. I can always pick up a book. :-)
Desley (Cat fosterer) wrote: "Ooh, interesting challenges, and like the idea of doing places for a name challenge"Thanks, Desley! I think it will be fun.
It's the 3rd & I've finished 2 books I started last year. Feeling pretty good about that, but it will probably slow down for a bit. Hope y'all had a great weekend & staying safe. B & I will be being extra careful for a month or so due to Omicron. Grocery pickup or delivery only for awhile. I'm in a 'wait & see' mode about upcoming Special Olympics activities. Sadly, we have 6 doctor appointments this month! I have a checkup on Wednesday & the rest are Bradley's. He's doing well ... no symptoms so far. Hopefully, with the change his body will begin to heal. He was taking too much naproxen sodium & it did some damage. He's tylenol only now! We'll see what that doctor says as he's one of the ones we'll be seeing.

I have three doctors doing virtual appts but have to go to several in person along with PT. Cancelled Physical Therapy this week just to be cautious.
I too am fearful about what naproxen does. I have been eating them like m&ms but my new nerve meds have helped me cut down the dose.
Hoping you both have a happy and safe 2022 Martha🎉📚🎉

It's a wonderful problem to have, trying to squeeze in all these good books!
Mid-January update - 5 books readGoal for 2022 is 85 books ... tentatively.
1. The Bad Seed William March 1/1/22
4 stars - creepy, suspenseful, tense ... delightful! I've seen the movie numerous times over the years & had recorded it on my dvr. I waited to watch it & wondered if the book would have the same ending. I won't give that away.
2. Little House on the Prairie Laura Ingalls Wilder 1/3/22
5 stars - A bit embarrassed to admit I'd never read this before. Such a sweet book & so detailed. I absolutely loved it.
3. Anne of Windy Poplars L.M. Montgomery 1/8/22
4.5 stars - Another delightful installment in this series. Anne can meet the strangest people. She is principal of a school in this book. It covers 3 years of her life after college. A large portion of it is told in her letters to her fiance.
4. Locke & Key, Vol. 2: Head Games Joe Hill 1/12/22
5 stars - OMG!!! I love Joe Hill for the hours of enjoyment he's provided. If you like graphic novels/comics ... and even if you don't ... you should read this series. Wow! Just wow!
5. The Kingmaker's Daughter Philippa Gregory 1/13/22
4 stars - Gregory is my 2nd favorite author of this period. This series is wonderful. Anne Neville is the main character in this 4th book in the series. A previous favorite character is now an enemy as seen through Anne's eyes. There was a lot of heartbreak along the way to her becoming Queen as her father wanted. And she found love. - a side note ... this was the final book from 2021 list of 12+4 books. YAY!
Currently reading - Lincoln - it's a slow process. It's paperback, but one of those huge ones that are hard for me to hold. It's very interesting!
On Bowie - so good! Reading this for the color challenge this month
Arabella - for a challenge in the Georgette Heyer group. It's a reread for me, but I love it so not a chore.
The Beekeeper's Apprentice - Finally getting around to reading this one. It's so good!!
T is for Trespass - this one is going to get very interesting very soon. Kinsey has some trouble ahead!
and my 2 holdovers from 2021 -
Night Has a Thousand Eyes - very good, but it's an audiobook & I just have a harder time actually listening.
The Dante Club - I will get back to it, just wanted to finish off some of the other ones I started last year
Upcoming -
Mansfield Park - my PIFM choice for January ... it's been a very long time since I've read Austen. Looking forward to it.
Yes, Locke and Key series is soo good, and I think they get better and better. If you liked #2, you're in for a treat.
Ioana wrote: "Yes, Locke and Key series is soo good, and I think they get better and better. If you liked #2, you're in for a treat."Good to know. It’s been on my TBR for about 2 years and I keep passing over it.

You won't regret it, Beth! Ioana, I have the 3rd one on order. It's taking awhile so I may order #4 soon. They are quick reads. I don't keep many books anymore, but I do keep these.
I like your first five selections very much. And it looks like you're continuing with great books. Off to a great start, Martha.

End of January/early February update - 5 more books read so a total of 10 so far (8 in January which is good for me)6. Arabella Georgette Heyer 1/19/22
4 stars - I love Heyer!! This was my 2nd time to read this one. Her books are fun with witty dialogue ... nice palate cleansers between the gritty mysteries.
7. T is for Trespass Sue Grafton 1/29/22
5 stars - This was so good!! I think it may be my favorite of the series. The tension builds slowly, but steadily and doesn't give you a chance to relax. Great, great writing!
8. Locke & Key, Vol. 3: Crown of Shadows Joe Hill 1/30/22
5 stars ... Again, I just love Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodriguez!
9. Lad: A Dog Albert Payson Terhune 2/5/22
4 stars - I grew up with a collie and loved him dearly. Not sure why I never read this before, but it was very good. I may read more. I think there are at least 2 more books about Lad.
10. The Beekeeper's Apprentice Laurie R. King 2/8/22
5 stars - I read the 14th in the series over a year ago (I think I needed a book with a woman's name in the title & it fit.). It was so good that I immediately ordered this first in the series. Of course, I got distracted. It is excellent & I will definitely continue reading the further adventures of Holmes & Russell.
Currently reading - Lincoln - it's a slow process. It's paperback, but one of those huge ones that are hard for me to hold. It's very interesting! No changes here, just have been very busy so am making slow progress.
On Bowie - so good! Reading this for the color challenge this month ... over half done & really enjoying it.
Hooked on Murder - nice cozy with a crochet theme ... should be perfect for me, right? Anyway, it passes my litmus test of not being super silly as some cozies can get.
Outrage ... where is Erlendur? :-( Ah well, still an enjoyable, if depressing mystery. LOL
and my 2 holdovers from 2021 -
Night Has a Thousand Eyes - had to start this one over as I lost track. Apparently, I can read numerous books at one time, but I can only listen to one at a time. Who knew?
The Dante Club - I will get back to it, just wanted to finish off some of the other ones I started last year
Upcoming -
Mansfield Park - my PIFM choice for January ... still haven't started it, but will do so in a day or so.

Nice update, you are reading some good ones. One of the reasons I love my kindle is the ease of storing and holding the big tomes. Plus, I can adjust the font 😉

Me too, there are some books I wouldn't have tried tackling without the kindle, the 700 page book I read the other year was hard to read, certainly wouldn't have tried last years 900+ page books

I have the 4th L&K, but am holding off reading it to try to read some of my others first. Sue Grafton is definitely missed. Kinsey is one of the greatest characters ever written in the mystery world ... maybe in all of literature.

My issue is that for a few years I bought books for souvenirs at museums. They are definitely tomes! LOL I'm propping my arm on a pillow to help with the strain.

Most of the very long classics I've read have been on my kindle or kobo. Much easier to hold than the huge books.

Yes; Kinsey always kind of knew who she was and what she wanted; but as her world expanded, she grew up a little more. In the end, she was still conflicted about familial ties to an extent.

End of February update - 8 more books read for a total of 18 for the year.11. On Bowie Rob Sheffield 2/10/22
4 stars - I really enjoyed this bio of David Bowie. The author did a great job & I loved his memories of times he heard certain songs for the first time.
12. The Perfectly Proper Paranormal Museum Kirsten Weiss 2/13/22
3 stars - What can I say ... I love a good cozy! This was fun & the ending was a surprise. I would love to visit this museum. :-) I've already gotten the 2nd in the series.
13. Hooked on Murder Betty Hechtman 2/15/22
3.5 stars - I was hoping to like this one even more than I did due to the crochet connection, but it was good & I'll continue the series. I enjoyed reading about the new crocheters' struggle with making a granny square and ending up with only 3 corners. LOL There is something magical about turning a circle into a square.
14. Night Has a Thousand Eyes Cornell Woolrich 2/16/21
4 stars - Good ... odd ... was it a con job or was he really able to predict the future? Hmmm
15. My Trip Down the Pink Carpet Leslie Jordan 2/21/22
4 stars - I've always loved LJ ... he's hilarious! Sort of rediscovered him with so many during the pandemic with his Pillow Talk with Leslie Jordan. I believe he did a great service to us all with his funny stories. He has come through some difficult times with a positive attitude. He has a great knack of finding the humor in all situations.
16. The Foundling Georgette Heyer 2/23/22
5 stars - I know I've said this before, but I love GH!! This is a romance, but that part of the book is a very small part. The story is more of a person's attempt to gain some independence. Great story!
17. A Man's Heart Lori Copeland 2/25/22
4 stars - I picked this one up at the library ... Blind Date with a Book. Not one I would have chosen to read, but it was pretty good.
18. Assault and Batter Jessica Beck 2/27/22
2 stars - Not worth the time. I'm pretty sure that I won't continue this series. He should never write as a woman. It's just silly.
Currently reading - Lincoln - Slow progress, but I'm enjoying it.
Outrage ... where is Erlendur? :-( Ah well, still an enjoyable, if depressing mystery. LOL
The Dante Club - Picking up with this one where I left off. I usually start books over when it's been this long, but I'm not revisiting the maggot pages. LOL
Mansfield Park - my PIFM choice for January ... Yes, I'm behind as usual.
Secrets of Hallstead House - just getting started ... looks good so far. This is my new author challenge book.
Deadly Appearances - current audiobook. Pretty good so far. Canadian author.
Night Prey - Great so far. Serial killer doesn't stand a chance with Lucas in pursuit.
You've read a lot of interesting books this month and have a lot more on the go. Looking forward to your thoughts.

Thank you!! I'm enjoying reading very much right now. With the storm systems that have moved through lately, I've spent so much time at home ... more than usual. I don't mind it at all. I love being home with a cup of coffee or tea and a good book. Doesn't get much better than that.
