4. Anne's Cradle: The Life and Works of Hanako Muraoka, Japanese Translator of Anne of Green Gables by Eri Muraoka. Translated from Japanese. Finished August 20.
Alwynne wrote: "I hope you thought it was worth reading, have a copy awaiting!"I did, but it wasn’t quite what I expected. I greatly enjoyed the view over time of women’s role in society and culture over the author’s grandmother’s life time, and the suffrage arc, the impact of the War, and the mentions of many female authors who existed but were marginalized or dyed young, too. And the end notes were great. It was a bit over-inclusive (I skipped the letters) and her grandma is depicted as almost 200% saintly, but somehow I found it charming and not sappy, I’ll be really interested to see what you think. It’s quite a fast read.
Great that sounds promising, particularly the social and cultural material, I imagined it wouldn't be ground-breaking, so that's more than enough to meet my expectations!
