Welcome to Team Whooville

Now that you have found your way here please introduce yourself to the team in as much or as little detail as you wish to

Have you read the book or watched the movie?
Is this your first time playing UNO?

Please remember to link your UNO shelf, it is helpful if you only add books to this shelf as you start reading them not for long term plans, we use the shelves to double check books and page counts.

If you haven't played before please read the rules carefully. It looks far more daunting than it is. If you have any questions do ask and Nanci and I should be able to help.

Our Team Spreadsheet is linked above showing our February Cards, take a look at what color covers are needed and see what you can do.
We also have Reverse cards so take a look at each others read shelve, see if anything takes your fancy. If you have read a particularly good book recently let us know.

Books can be logged on the tracking spreadsheet, or posted here if you prefer, make sure to include details of the cards it fits.

Make sure to check in at least once a week so we know you are still playing.

Most importantly have fun and Happy Reading

Louise | 1282 comments Hi All, I'm Louise from a currently rather cold Wales. This is my 6th year playing UNO and it is one of my favourites. I'm a challenge addict, when this officially starts I'll have 6 team challenges on the go with at least 2 more forecast!

Sent a friend request out to everyone, easier to compare books.

UNO - 22

Nanci | 1864 comments Hi Teamies!
I'm Nanci, your co-captain. I live in the US in Virginia on the east coast. My husband and I have been together 47 years. We have 3 adult children, all married, and 6 grandkids, so far.

I love UNO and have played for 6 years also. Amazingly, Louise and I have never been on the same team before! I started co-captaining after my first season and have been hooked ever since.

I also sent friend requests to each of you. I'm excited for another season of UNO and getting to know new people!https://www.goodreads.com/review/list...

Alla (allaskarp) | 364 comments Hi! I´m Alla and I come from currently rainy and windy Iceland ;)
This is my 3rd time playing UNO and I absolutely loved it the other two times I played. I love playing challenges and I participate in them all year around. I find that playing challenges gets me sooner to some books on my TBR list and also takes me out of my genre "comfort zone" which I love doing.
I have not read the book or seen the movie our team is named after...yet.
Happy to be on this team and happy reading to you all!

Alla (allaskarp) | 364 comments I would like to read 9 Red with The Beast of Beswick (Everleigh Sisters, #1) by Amalie Howard

Alison (a1ison74) | 1050 comments Hi all, I'm Alison from an occasionally sunny Scotland. I think this will be my 8th time playing Uno. It was the first team challenge I ever took part in so is definitely a favourite. I've captained and co captained a few times but work is just too busy at the moment.

My shelf is set up but I'm on the app just now so I can't share the link. Will do once I get on my laptop in the morning

message 17: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 597 comments Hello! I'm Melissa from snowy Vermont, USA. This is my first time playing UNO, and I'm really excited. I've played quite a few other challenges through Nothing But Reading Challenges group, so I'm somewhat familiar with how these things work :) But I probably will still have a bunch of questions.
I agree that reading challenges have me reading things outside my comfort zone.
One of my favorite books as a kid was Horton Hears a Who - which has Whos in it :) I looked it up, and I guess they are the same type of being as the ones in Whoville :) and yes, I have read the Grinch and seen the old animated movie. Whos are so nice.

Here is my shelf: https://www.goodreads.com/review/list...

Melissa | 597 comments I'm working on figuring what cards I could take :)

message 19: by Louise (new)

Louise | 1282 comments Welcome all, February cards are in here

If you like to plan out your reading in advance feel free to add your books to the tracking spreadsheet:

message 20: by Nanci (new)

Nanci | 1864 comments Welcome Alla, Alison and Melissa! So glad you're here!

I will claim In the Shadow of the Banyan by Vaddey Ratner for yellow 7 (AFN-Vaddey). It will also work for yellow 5, if that works better for the team.

I will take of the Yellow 1 with Float Plan

message 22: by Nanci (new)

Nanci | 1864 comments Welcome, Megan! Jealous of your weather!
I went ahead and highlighted your Yellow 1 book on the tracking sheet in yellow, so it will be easy to find.

Louise, if you'd rather we not highlight feel free to change.

I've read Float plan, really enjoyed it :)

message 25: by Alison (new)

Alison (a1ison74) | 1050 comments I have to confess to being a bit of a mood reader so I am not great at sticking to a reading plan. I usually have a rough idea what I'll read but frequently wander off plan if I'm just not in the right mood for a certain kind of book.

I have a couple of books on my shelf with yellow covers that will definitely work for a yellow 1 so I can take one of those cards

message 26: by Louise (new)

Louise | 1282 comments Morning all, quick check in before work added everyone’s claimed post above.

@Nanci feel free to highlight I’m a very visual spreadsheet user easier on the eyes.

@Megan I find I do that rather than read a book and find out it works for a color card later in the game.

@Alison I have that many challenges on the go my reading plan changes week to week.

If anyone has a Yellow 7 we can slot Nanci’s book into hand 10 to cover two cards.

message 27: by Kristel (new)

Kristel | 586 comments Hello Everyone!

My name is Kristel and I'm from Estonia. I think it's my 5th or 6th time playing uno and I can't wait to start this year:)

Link to my Uno shelf

message 28: by Kristel (new)

Kristel | 586 comments Like Alison, I also tend to be more of a mood reader, but I'll look and see what colour covers I might have:)

message 29: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 597 comments I found a yellow seven!!
I feel accomplished :)
The Unexpected Inheritance of Inspector Chopra (Baby Ganesh Agency Investigation #1) by Vaseem Khan
I'll read that first

message 30: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 597 comments I think I put it on our tracking list correctly? But if someone could check?

message 31: by Cate (new)

Cate Neuhauser (catelovescato) | 33 comments Morning y'all. I am Cate, currently living in Florida.
I played UNO last year, but came in as a substitute a couple weeks into playing. I am definitely a bit of a mood reader, but am also really good at following direction. If someone tells me to find a coloured cover, or a theme is needed I can usually comply and find something on my shelves quickly and get it read within 48-hours.
I do have Stephen King's Christine on my to read list, and my cover is Red (https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1...) if we want to add that for the RED.
I started adding books that I want to read at some point during the next few months to my UNO shelf, which can be found below::

https://www.goodreads.com/review/list...

Melissa, you did it just right and yay for finding that book! We're already working great as a. team!

We lived in Hanover, NH 30 years ago, just across the river from Norwich, VT. Many fond memories of those two states!

message 33: by Alison (new)

Alison (a1ison74) | 1050 comments My uno shelf can be found here Uno_2022

I think I'm probably going to read The Other Black Girl by Zakiya Dalila Harris for the yellow 1 card but I also have Our Stop by Laura Jane Williams as an alternative option

message 34: by Alison (new)

Alison (a1ison74) | 1050 comments I think I may also have The Summer Job by Lizzy Dent for that 8 green, it's not an obvious 8 (or green) but based on a review it looks like the main character's real name may be Elizabeth. I can keep it up my sleeve as a potential in case we can't find anything else.

Everyone usually complains about yellow covers being hard to find but I always seem to struggle with greens the most

message 35: by Nanci (new)

Nanci | 1864 comments Welcome, Kristel! We had the opportunity to visit your beautiful country before Covid hit. We visited Tallin. I see it just got recognized as the 2022 UNESCO city of music. Cate, well you are a dream teammate! So glad you're here and on our team. Thanks for the link to your shelf.

The red cards are both for card 9. Does your King book have an N character or does it take place in an N place? If so, go ahead and put it on the tracking SS.

*BTW, if anyone is not comfortable or unable to add books to the spreadsheet, just let us know and Louise or I can do it for you.

Yes, the main character ends up in New Jersey at the end of the novel. I added that to the spreadsheet

Louise | 1282 comments Welcome Cate and Kristel.

I’ve added all the claimed colored books to the tracking post.

We have 9📕 and 2 WD4s remaining. @Cate can you double check if Christine will fit the red card that would be great.

message 41: by Alla (new)

Alla (allaskarp) | 364 comments I can also cover WD4 for green, either with A Hoyden to Hold (The Hoydens of Hyde Park, #3) by Eva Devon or The Siren of Sussex (Belles of London, #1) by Mimi Matthews

Cate according to the rules, the setting needs to be the main setting for most of to book to qualify.
This is from the FAQs:
For location, is it just the city, state, country or are locations such as "Snowberry Manor" or maybe a specific lake or mountain name counted?
It needs to be the main setting for the book.

I'm thinking since the book only ends in New Jersey, it won't work. You can still read it, or save it for a possible 6 red for a later round.
Louise, what do you think?

message 44: by Cate (new)

Louise | 1282 comments Cate wrote: "There’s also their friend Norman who plays football with them."

This will work if it meets the below from the q&a

Where is the cut off line for when a character's name can or cannot be used for a card?
We generally want them to have some dialogue and meaning to the story. Not just a hotel bellhop called Victor that opens a door, for example

message 46: by Alison (new)

Alison (a1ison74) | 1050 comments Just having a look at the sheet and it looks like we have a Draw 2 in a hand with a 5 Yellow and a Wild Draw 4. Could we not use the same book for both?

Very nice! We like it here too :)

message 49: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 597 comments So, just to make sure, the rest of the books we need just need to be for the numbers left - they don't have to have a particular colored cover?
And we have like a gazillion reverses, so we can just go to our teammates read books and find ones we want to read? Or do they need to have been read for this challenge?

message 50: by MeganWritesAndCrafts (last edited Jan 18, 2022 03:24PM) (new)

MeganWritesAndCrafts (meganreadsandcrafts) | 124 comments I have two books that can fill in Red 9/DRAW 4 wild Good Girl, Bad Blood and The Collective both have characters named Natalie :) Let me know which or if either is needed and I will pull them. I am pulling books and organizing my TBR cart today
