What are Galleons?
A Galleon, or also known as Gold-Galleon (ʛ), is the most valued coin of the wizarding currency used in Britain. One Galleon was equal to 17 Sickles or 493 Knuts. Galleons were made of gold. Around the edge of each Galleon was a series of numerals which represented a serial number referring to the goblin that cast the coin.
What are Sickles?
A Sickle, or Silver-Sickle was the second-most valued coin of the wizarding currency used in Great Britain. Made out of silver, one Sickle was equal to 29 Knuts, and 17 Sickles made up a Galleon. Around the edge of each Sickle was a series of numerals which represented a serial number referring to the goblin that cast the coin.
What are Knuts?
The Knut (pronounced ca-nut), or Bronze-Knut, was the least valued coin in British wizarding currency. There were 29 Knuts in one silver Sickle, and there were 493 Knuts in one golden Galleon. Witches and wizards are not averse to laborious calculations, as they can do them magically, so they do not find it inconvenient to pay for goods in Knuts, Sickles and Galleons. Around the edge of each Knut was a series of numerals which represented a serial number referring to the goblin that cast the coin.
How Much Each Coin Is:
Galleons are worth $6.64 in US Money, while Sickles are worth $0.39, and Knuts are worth $0.01.
What About Leprechaun Gold?
Leprechaun Gold is just Galleons. However, they are not regular Galleons. Irish people, including Leprechauns themselves, often use this gold to trick others. It is often used in pranks, or if someone looses a debt, they trick the winner and give them Leprechaun Gold. Why is that, you may ask? That is because Leprechaun Gold disappears after some time. Only Goblins and Leprechauns can tell the difference between actual Galleons, and Leprechaun Gold.
