Maugham is a great story teller.

I turned my niece onto him last year and she read all his short stories back to back. He’s pretty much tied with Galsworthy as my favorite classic author.

Maugham is a great writer! I often recommend him to others. I also liked the name of your challenge.

Thank you.

Re the other two playwrights, if anyone is interested:

If you happen to be an old movie buff, give "Separate Tables" a gander. That's a Rattigan play and I believe it netted David Niven an Oscar. Or if you've seen the 1999 film directed by David Mamet called "The Winslow Boy" - that's also a Rattigan play.

Re Philip Barry -- again, if you're an old movie buff, check out a couple of Katharine Hepburn's earlier movies - "Holiday" and "The Philadelphia Story."

I've read two plays so far, both sort of accidental:
The Year of Magical Thinking: The Play
The Mountaintop

Both excellent!

Martha (marthas48) | 771 comments I'm so distracted lately. I've read one poem by Charlotte Bronte. Pilate's Wife's Dream. I plan to read more. Also, my January BOMC selection is a collection of stories so I'll try to add that to my ever-increasing currently reading stack. It's Fiona and Jane

That sounds like an interesting story collection.

Roses are red
violets are blue
I like reading
And so do you.

There. Now you've read two poems. :)

Patricia | 1207 comments Since I didn't manage to complete any plays this year, I'm going to check out your list and hope I find a few I will like. Congrats on reading so many!

I recommend A. R. Gurney's Love Letters, and his The Dining Room. Rattigan's Separate Tables and The Winslow Boy are both good and have been made into beautiful films. Lombardi was very good if you are a football fan. The Audience was excellent if you are a fan of The Crown on Netflix -- same writer. If you are a fan of old movies, Philip Barry wrote both Holiday and The Philadelphia Story -- both vehicles for Cary Grant and Katharine Hepburn in the late 30s/early 40s.

Thanks! They will be added to my TBR!
