To reply to your final question - there was a TV series probably ten years ago now called the Tenth Kingdom which saw two ordinary characters drawn into a magical kingdom with many of the fairy tales depicted. I quite enjoyed it (though perhaps a little predictable and 'nice'), but I'm not sure how popular it was generally...
YES. I have been saying for fifteen years how this book needs a movie. yes. Maybe leave out books 4-7 though. Those...those weren't very good.

The rest... not his best. But fun.
I actually reviewed this book today stating: The entire time I read Magic Kingdom, I felt as though I was watching a mini movie in my head. The characters and scenery were well depicted and easily visualized. I would love to see it shown love and brought to life on the big screen by a talented director. The movie that played in my head as I read the book was a mix of Lord of the Rings and The NeverEnding Story with a sprinkle of Harry Potter thrown in. Properly executed I think it could be a classic film.

When is the last time a movie came out about a normal, everyday guy, in a medieval time, with real magic? The dream farce, A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court maybe? But this is a different story that is not in the protagonist's sleep-induced imagination.
