Natasha Holme (natashaholme) | 465 comments Finished reading Stone Butch Blues by Leslie Feinberg (being queer in the US before the 1969 Stonewall Riots), and The Vanishing Half by Brit Bennett (having black blood and passing as white in the US a few decades ago), both of which I really enjoyed.

Now reading Dead Lions by Mick Herron (British Secret Service thriller) and The Elements of Typographic Style by Robert Bringhurst (a classic manual on typography).

Bill | 466 comments A co-worker & I were talking about books made into movies and he mentioned The Leopard byGiuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa. I wasn't familiar with either though he assured me they are both quality. I trust his taste. Book first!

Bill | 466 comments The Winter Olympics are set to begin in less than 2 weeks in Beijing. Ordinarily I'd be excited but with things coming out of China my anticipation is being tested.

I'm reading Power Games: A Political History of the Olympics by Jules Boykoff

message 21: by Tom (new)

Tom | 19 comments Currently reading On The Red Hill by Mike Parker. It was highly recommended by 3 friends in my reading bubble. I’m agreeing. I’m also reading Alec by William diCanzio on my Kindle. A good bedtime read. Finished (finally) Dhalgren by Samuel R Delany. It has been on my bookshelf for probably 40 years.

After having planned to read that for at least that long, I finally read it in 2018.

Greg Just finished The Prophets by Robert Jones Jr., a story of love between two male slaves on a Southern plantation. Very lyrical, evocative, disturbing, and strange . . . also at times quite beautiful.

Now on to In the Dream House by Carmen Maria Machado and The Heart's Invisible Furies by John Boyne!

I've read several of Boyne's works; I do think "Hearts Invisible Furies" is the best though I've still got more of his to read.

Still on the waiting list for "The Prophets" at my city library. The fact that it's in demand tells me it must be good!.

Sounds good Bill! I haven't read anything by Boyne yet, and I've been looking forward to it as several friends like his work.

Prophets has an unusual/unique style, but I did really like it! The author mentioned that he was influenced by Toni Morrison and James Baldwin, and I can definitely see both of those influences, as well as something altogether his own.

message 27: by Natasha (new)

Natasha Holme (natashaholme) | 465 comments Finished Into the Water by Paula Hawkins and Comforting Thoughts About Death That Have Nothing to Do with God by Greta Christina.

Started Educated by Tara Westover.

message 28: by Emma | Book Life (new)

Emma | Book Life | 1 comments Currently reading “A Darker Shade of Magic” by VE Schwab. Fantasy is pretty new to me and this was recommended by someone in Waterstones. I’m 51 pages in and I’m not feeling it yet. Keep zoning out and despite reading every single word, I have idea what I’ve just read. So lots of re reading going on. Will persevere.
