A well told HF. I was concerned I would not like it, as it is another duel timeline and I have grown tired of those. This one is done particularly well, the chapters split between the late 15th century and the WII years in France and Italy. Don't let WWII make you turn away, the story does not dwell on it.

1939-Anne is a young girl working as a typist in the Louvre. She is asked to accompany the archivists as they hurriedly pack and transport the great art of Europe out of Paris to safer locations.

1479- Bellina is a companion and servant to Lisa when Leonardo da Vinci is commissioned to paint her mistresses portrait.

Both time-lines are well written and researched. However the years spent with da Vinci are my favorite, simply because I learned a lot about him, and the time period. I had no idea who Brother Savonarola was, and found myself googling to uncover the history of this monk. The Medici family is also weaved into the story.

Laura Morelli holds a Ph,D in art history and so her research is well done and well documented at the back of the book. Three stars for content and writing and 1 for the research.

Highly recommend for those who love HF, a good story teller and researcher

Theresa | 16018 comments Excellent review and I am looking forward to it. Savonarola was quite the historic figure.

A non-fiction I recommend about saving the art in Europe from the Nazis is The Rape of Europa: The Fate of Europe's Treasures in the Third Reich and the Second World War by Lynn H. Nicholas. I believe there is a photo in it of Winged Victory being carried down exterior steps of the Louvre.
