I got a head start on this one in February. This is my first Chuck Wendig read and I have to say I was delightfully surprised by some of the (absolutely gorgeous, vivid) imagery in this book. He paints these beautiful and horrific tableaux that I’ve found haunting and unforgettable. I mean, the firefly scene? Outstanding. To be a little critical, I’ve been somewhat annoyed with what seems to be political pandering throughout the novel*. I also feel like some of the themes/ plot points seem over ambitious or maybe over complicated. It feels like the author filled his bag with horror archetypes, shook it, and dumped it on the page. Other than that, this has been a fun ride so far.* I would like to make a note of saying I happen to agree with the political opinions shared in the story, but the way they are shared feels buzzwordy and inauthentic, like the narrator is trying to validate themselves as opposed to having a genuine discourse on these issues.
If you watch the Page Break podcast with Brian McClellan, this week he's going to feature Chuck Wendig:
