Just received this and read this first chapter. Hard not to compare this to the Cherie Jones from last year. This one is written in Trinidadian vernacular.
Hmm, this one appeals to me only I abandoned the Cherie Jones within the first couple of chapters - I'm keen to see what you think, David, when you're a bit further in.
Delightful link to another book on the longlist - a Mum tells her child off for always making a pappyshow
One of my criticisms of One-Armed Woman was the less developed side plot that I thought distracted from the main characters. But reading this book, I wish there was a side plot.
I thought in the end this was excellent and I suspect will make my personal shortlist (but I was also it has to be said one of the bigger proponents of One-Armed Woman)https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
As expected, another VGR, Gumble. You’ve piqued my interest in this book that I didn’t really jump out at me at first.I love complex, fully formed characters and I enjoy the use of colloquial language. And one of my favorite coworkers is from Trinidad and has the lovely accent. (Sadly, he seems to have ended our 20 year friendship after joining a deeply fundamental Pentecostal church and is preparing for end times.)
Just finished this (and as a result, finally made my way through all 16 books on the longlist). I thought it was very good, much better actually than the Cherie Jones, which was the only book on last year's shortlist I thought was just ok. I thought it was better written and more compelling. I hope this makes the shortlist.
I liked this book - not enough to rank it #1 or #2 but well worth the read, unlike the talking tree book.
