I really enjoyed how the author used magical realism in this novel. It was fascinating to learn about the country of Liberia, where I don't think I've ever stopped over on my reading journey.

The story of three lives linked to the construction of Liberia, unites them with the struggle for freedom and a traumatic past. I feel at times that I was reading a set of short stories, and I didn't understand the end. I liked the references to the various tribes, and to know more about the History of Liberia. But I felt that something was missing, it seemed to me to be an incomplete narrative because we didn't truly understand the fate of the protagonists.
I found this an enjoyable book that gave me insight into the beginning of Liberia as a country. I thought Gbessa was a great character. The end was a bit rushed though. Here is my review
I agree that the ending felt rushes and the narrative wasn't well developed. But the writing was beautiful and the characters were very interesting. I felt like this book was not just about Liberia, but also an ode to the African diaspora. You can read my review here.
