The movie starts off with a distressed scene where a fisherman in a small village is selling his two daughters. Both daughters are relocated to the city where they are supposed to be Geishas when they are a little older. One sister escapes but Chiyo the youngest ends up being sold to a madam who trains her for the next few years.

The story also includes another character who Chiyo has been loving secretly for many years. The Chairman is this very influential rich man who met Chiyo when she first came to the city. Chiyo never forgot him and would frequently see him in passing.

Chiyo becomes the most sought after Geisha – having the highest fee for her first customer. Though they make it seem glamorous, I thought it was sad that young girls and women were treated as property. The movie still had some beauty and hope as Chiyo and the Chairman confess their love in the end. I give this movie a 5 out of 5 star rating.
