What's the Name of That Book??? discussion

The story follows a woodchuck(possibly living a humdrum life), as he meets another female woodchuck. Soon they get to know each other and eventually he proposes to her(in the book he talks about some type of saying that goes along with woodchuck marriage?). Potentially other animal characters are involved. The story cuts to a female child(4-8 yo) living in a neglectful house when she accidentally gets out and becomes lost, later to be found by the woodchuck couple. Details beyond this become fuzzy but I think the girl goes back to her family after they clean up their act? I'm not fully sure but I do remember having fond memories of this book(decently long with illustrations)
