For May's upcoming Moderator Pick, we are considering the following three books:

Our Lady of the Nile by Scholastique Mukasonga
Currently shortlisted for the 2022 Republic of Consciousness Prize, Mukasonga's novel is set 15 years prior to the Rawandan genocide. Two minority Tutsi daughters are sent to a school run by colonial white nuns. The complicated divisions within the country play out amidst the smaller academic society with prejudice and dreams prefacing horror.

The Seventh Function of Language by Laurent Binet
What if Roland Barthes was actually murdered?!! Binet weaves a conspiracy theory starring a French philosophy comedy cast: Jacques Derrida, Umberto Eco, François Mitterrand, Michel Foucault, Gilles Deleuze, John Searle, Julia Kristeva, and Giscard d'Estaing. If you like your language dismantled and your systems deconstructed, this might be the circus for you.

Cold New Climate by Isobel Wohl
The first publication by new UK small press Weatherglass Books, Wohl's "hyper-observant prose" tells the story of a tangled love set amidst global changes. The complexities of the heart return to the age old question of how we want to live our lives.

DaCane (esotarotdacane) | 16 comments Hi there I was all set to participate with the our lady of the Nile book but I just feel I may not be strong enough to endure certain hardships that may be experienced by the characters at this time…I did read the description before agreeing to participate but I am now afraid I may not be strong enough for the sadness that may come over me regarding the plight of the characters so I will participate in the reading of the open pick this time around…I just didn’t want it to come off as I give my word and then forget about a commitment when actually this is my reasoning here… <3
