Yes the follow up author tried to join up the robot stories with the foundation stories and involved some kind of time travel or time displacement. i need to read all the books again.
I am a bit late to this discussion but Wikipedia has done a great job of compiling all that was written of and around Asimov's Foundation.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Foundati...
7 in total by Asimov and 8 or so by others. A good reading order is up for debate. I suggest Foundation, Foundation and Empire, Second Foundation to start then the two prequels and then the three sequels.
Some do suggest reading I Robot first. In my mind the Foundation series was a better read the first time around without all of the 3 laws and robot stuff overlaid at the beginning. Once I knew the story, going back and reading it a second time allowed me to see details and connections I had missed the first time. The second time through though was not as immersive.
