I quite honestly think that this could, and would, happen in that time period. Thoughts?
This situation could happen, though it just as easily could go a different way. However, the point of the book isn’t to comment on what would happen if a bunch of little boys were stranded on an island. The book is a reflection of society’s tendency to turn to violence and war as a solution. It is a demonstration of man’s natural state, one that humankind is forever fighting against, trying so desperately to escape, but always seeming to revert to, having found no better way to deal with conflict. Golding had lived through both world wars. After the first one was declared “the war to end all wars” then another war promptly started, it is easy to see where Golding’s cynical views about humanity came from.
I also think it can happen. If their parents had no idea they were alive, they could be stuck on that Island and no one would find them.
These types of events can happen if you are isolated and have to survive alone without any direction. It is possible.
it feels more as though the book is critical of the culture, resulting in people acting more like monsters rather than actual humans. i don't believe that if it were any other group of people that it would have turned out this way. it's only an accurate depiction of high-class men ending up stranded on an island alone, that's all. goulding's belief is that people are naturally evil and i don't think this is the case at all.

I think people are too complex to be generalized by this book, and it's a unique situation being presented that is possible but not likely the final outcome.
Watch Absolute Documentaries on the Y-Tube. They did a social experiment with ten 12-13yo English boys (also girls in another video) left alone for a few days.
For the boys, it was absolutely quickly becoming a Lord of the Flies situation.
The resemblances were striking. The comparison to the girls video was interesting to see as well.
Kids be crazy.

Yes - this is what happens when the decent/intelligent people have no muscle.
Interestingly when traditional indigenous people are in the same situation they cooperate and harmonize which is the opposite of what happens within colonial mentality.
It is realistic in the sense that what author is trying to tell is true. The thirst for authority drives people mad. Consider this very century, 21st, but yeah millions of people are being persecuted.
