Written in free verse, Starfish is about Ellie who is tired of being fat-shamed at school and at home by her own siblings, but worse by her own mother. She goes by the Fat Girls Rules about how to not stand out. Her safe retreat is her swimming pool. As the new school year starts, her best friend moves away, she makes a new non-judgmental friend and gets a new therapist. Her new friend accepts her for who she is and has a very welcoming family. Her new therapist helps her learn new skills to cope and to stand up to those who fat shame her, especially her mom. But most importantly that she is worthy,

For such a sad topic, this is a wonderful book. We are all different and should never be made to feel less than because we are different.

Starfish is author, Lisa Fipps' debut novel. Although, it's a work of fiction, Lisa states in her author's note that every single mean thing that happen to Ellie in this book, happened to her.

This is a wonderfully written middle-grade book.
