I wasn't a big fan of Joan. She grated on me more when I read the book this time than she did the first time I read it. I kept wondering why Muldoon was so enamored with her.
I liked Joan (aside from her preoccupation with the age difference) and I enjoyed the banter between her and Mike - their romance was sweet. In terms of her change of mind, the thought of losing Mike forced her to realize the strength of her feelings for him.
I liked Joan but not her relationship with Mike. Hearing it made such a difference in the reread. I kept wanting him to walk away. The romance just didn’t work for me and I couldn’t put my finger on her turning point from treating him so condescendingly to loving him enough to marry. This was a fail for me.
I flip flopped on Joan throughout the entire story. She did make me crazy and more than once I wanted Mike to walk away. She is a character who didn't get her HEA wouldn't upset me. However, I am glad that Mike is happy with her. I agree with Lauren, when Joan saw that she could lose Mike she had to look inside and figure out what she really wants. She had to make some serious adjustments with her attitude.
Joan and Mike were a big fail for me too. She goes from believing he would sleep with the president's drunk daughter to wanting to marry him in less than a day. A whole lot of missing steps here. I guess the whole "he could have died" thing played a key role here.
Remember that scene in the bar when she came to apologize and he was having none of it? That might have been a turning point. He shutdown on her and she really had to work on getting his forgiveness. That might have been Joan’s reality check.
