I read it some time ago but I do remember being impressed with the plot, and especially the two young main characters.
I started The Betrothed and finished the first 8 chapters (sort of part 1 according to Wikipedia). I'm enjoying it very much. I'm surprised at how fast moving the story is.
I thought it was very fast-moving too, Piyangie. It was very readable. There is the right amoung of description, explanation and action.

Exactly, Kathy. It’s very pleasant when you come across such a book.

Rosemarie, one thing that I think the author draws well is the nun's indecision and inability to make up her mind. You understand why she doesn't have the courage to do as she really wants. It is so clear that the author is taking a stand against legal systems that fail.
Does anyone else have thoughts? The mob and the atmosphere during the event comes across well too.
There s a lot about a person's ambivalence --for example the "unnamed" is unhappy with the decisions he has made. I enjoy character portrayal, so I am glad the book isn't solely about exciting episodes. Lots does happen!
There are two threads for the book, but this is the current one, Chrissie.
