SF: UpgradeF: Ordinary Monsters
Full disclosure, I have arcs of these and have already started them. So I'll have finished them before August, but I'd love to discuss them with the group.
F: Book of Night by Holly Black. I read the beginning and got interested
SF: Upgrade, definitely. I love Blake Crouch. Of course, I am assuming the library will buy it.

SF Eversion by Alastair Reynolds I've heard rave reviews of the author's space opera series, but yet to read a novel by him, so if it wins...

Scratch that, for F I'd instead like to nominate All the Seas of the World by Guy Gavriel Kay.

Oh, another author I planned to read, definitely seconding it!

All of these nominations look great. I am having trouble with SF nominations, though. Even when I recommend SF books to the library, the library is mostly buying fantasy only. I guess that's the way the wind is blowing around here.

It is very interesting to see the statistics on who uses libraries by age and gender - I know e.g. that women read more than men for all age groups but I've never checked what buy/borrow stats are

Also, the stats probably vary from place to place . . .

A lot of this year's hot SF has been scheduled to be published later in the year, which doesn't help. But that pipeline finally seems to be opening up.

That's the usual schedule from what I've read. Do you think we should allow for 2021 books to be nominated to broaden choices?

"That's the usual schedule from what I've read. Do you think we should allow for 2021 books to be nominated to broaden choices?"I think there's more than enough in the pipeline now, and insofar as hot new works are due later, it may encourage us to explore some other ones anyway.
I'm on mobile so can't link but for SF I'm nominating A Prayer for the Crown-Shy by Becky Chambers.

oh, a new one, I like it!

The monthly reads for August are
A Prayer for the Crown-Shy by Becky Chambers for SF
and
All the Seas of the World by Guy Gavriel Kay for fantasy

and
All the Seas of the World by Guy Gavriel Kay for fantasy
Is the guy Gabriel Kay a stand alone? I was reading some reviews saying you need to read his other books first.
It's a standalone. Several of his books share a similar (not sure if they're exactly the same) early-renaissance based secondary world.
Granted, I haven't read this one so I'm not sure if it's a spiritual sequel that benefits from reading A Brightness Long Ago or Children of Earth and Sky, the two books mentioned in the blurb. But you shouldn't need to read them.

Thanks Kalin for the clarification - I thought so, because usually here on GR librarians quickly add series on books' pages and this one has none
I should also add, I read A Brightness Long Ago a year or two ago and had absolutely no problem with the story even though the shared-worlds issue came up. I think there are potentially decades or centuries between each story, and probably at most there are cameos of a character from one book in another.
Has A Prayer for the Crown-Shy been released yet? I can't seem to find it in any of the library lists.
