SarahKat | 6393 comments This thread is to discuss The Kaiju Preservation Society by John Scalzi.

Pages: 264 pages

Length: 1 month (July)

Participants: Elaine, Library, Saha

Everyone reads at their own pace during a Buddy Read. Because participants can be at different parts of the book at different times, it is extremely important to mark spoilers so that the book is not ruined for someone who is not as far along as others!!!

Mark spoilers by placing {spoiler} before the text and {/spoiler} after the text but use the < and > instead of the { and }.

Elaine | 150 comments I have my copy from the library and hope to start it soon!

Elaine | 150 comments I had read enough positive recommendations regarding this book to give me a strong hunch that I would like it. That, plus having enjoyed the one John Scalzi book I previously read**, had me happily opening the book this morning ready to be entertained. And boy was I. I laughed out loud more than once and enjoyed keeping track of various references, pop culture and otherwise. Not to say everything was sweetness and light, because it wasn't. But it was satisfying and enjoyable and a delightful way to spend a few hours. If I really sit and think about it, do I have some quibbles? Maybe one or two. Do I care? Nope. Not at all. 10 out of 10, highly recommend!

Karen I would like to join the read. My copy of the book should come to my library next week.

Library Queen I'd never really read this author before, but the book sounded weird, and I was in a weird mood when I saw the request, so I thought, eh, why not?

Other than the hand wavey science (meh, if I want actual science I'll read a textbook) I actually really enjoyed it. And by really enjoyed it, I mean I was kinda half comparing it to one of my favorite series, the murderbot diaries, and it was still funny. I actually liked this so much I've decided to read another of his right away, and I can't wait for you all to read it so we can discuss!

Thieryn | 133 comments I am so into the Star Wars references in this book! I know Scalzi is a huge nerd, and so am I, so this was an excellent read for me! It made me laugh, it kept me engaged, and I absolutely loved Jamie and Aparna and Kahurangi and Niamh. And Tom Stevens too, Satie and Val, and MacDonald, and everyone in it.
Except for Rob Sanders, who is an ass throughout the book.
