In the Land of the Kiwis - Te Araroa Trail
Trail Continued6. Marlborough

The first region we encounter in the South Island is that of Marlborough, which is known for its coast full of bays. It is worth mentioning that some of these bays were used by the British explorer, James Cook, during his stays. The path is quite simple: alternating bays and forests with some pastureland. Breeding of sheep and cattle is very important in this region so there are some rules to respect to avoid causing problems for farmers. In this regard, keep an eye on the official trail site which is updated with all the indications of dangers, closures, detours, etc. Finally, the region is also famous for its wine production, in case you want to take a wine excursion.
✱ Read a book set on a farm or ranch OR
✱ Read a book with a character named James or a variation of it (i.e Jim, Jimmy, Jack, etc.) OR
✱ Read a book whose author's initials can be found in MARLBOROUGH.
7. Tasman

The region of Tasman will test your strength as we reach the New Zealand Alps. Here the path becomes impervious, with several climbs and long periods far from civilization, where you'll have to be self-sufficient. Overnight stays are guaranteed by the huts, which offer very spartan shelters (see the photo above to believe it). There are rivers and streams to cross, and in winter and spring some areas can be covered with snow and be at risk of avalanches. That said, the landscapes are exceptional, though - keep your camera close at hand!
✱ Read a book with mountains on the cover (post cover) OR
✱ Read a book in which a character takes photographs OR
✱ Read a book whose title includes all the letters of HUT (in any order).
8. Canterbury

During the crossing of the next region of Canterbury, alpine landscapes will alternate with pastures. In particular this area is known for the production of fine merino wool. The danger here is once again constituted by the crossing of rivers. While there are no problems when there is little water, in case of flood it is imperative to avoid crossing and proceed on long alternative laps. The Rakaia River, on the other hand, must always be crossed using a car. You will also find several lakes in this region. We can almost say that water is the theme of this part of the journey.
✱ Read a book with yarn or sheep on the cover (post cover) OR
✱ Read a book whose title contains a word that describes a body of water (river, lake, sea, pool, etc.) OR
✱ Read a book with an MC whose first name starts with a letter in CANTERBURY.
9. Otago

In the next region, Otago, we will encounter several inhabited centers during our journey, which will provide various recreational activities. This area is, in fact, very popular with tourists who love all outdoor activities. Here we'll skirt two very large lakes, the Wanaka and the Wakatipu. Despite the large presence of lakes and rivers, in some parts of the path it is difficult to stock up on drinking water, so you need to have
a good supply with you. As in many other sections of the trail, kayaking is also possible here as an alternative.
✱ Read a book with a tourism theme OR
✱ Read a book with THIRST in the text (share text) OR
✱ Read a book where the first letter of every word in the title can be found in WANAKA AND WAKATIPU LAKES (3 Word Minimum).
10. Southland

Finally, we enter the last region of Southland. Once again, we'll cross the most diverse landscapes: spectacular mountains, resplendent lakes, lush forests, pastures and, finally, again the beaches and bays in the last stretch of this long journey. I think this trip has shown us why the shooting of the films dedicated to The Lord of the Rings were made here, so much so that New Zealand is often identified with Middle-earth. Fans of the book and/or film will find here organized tours that will take them to visit some of the locations or places found in the story.
✱ Read a book tagged FANTASY in its GR Homepage OR
✱ Read a book that has been made into a movie OR
✱ Read a book whose title begins with a letter in SOUTHLAND (ignore A, An or The).
11. Finish: Bluff

And finally we'll arrive at Stirling Point, the southern end of this route. It is located in Bluff, the southernmost inhabited center in New Zealand which lies on a peninsula south of the city of Invercargill. Like all visitors, we cannot help but photograph the yellow signpost that shows the distance between New Zealand and some world locations. Tired, but satisfied, we can say that we have crossed all of New Zealand.
✱ Read a book with a road sign on the cover (post cover) OR
✱ Read the last book in a series (share series title) OR
✱ Read a book where the protagonist reaches a goal after a long job or journey.

Ready to explore a new trail? Patrizia is taking us to the beautiful country of New Zealand.
In the Seventies, the idea of a hiking route that crossed the whole of New Zealand began to form, but it will be necessary to wait for the beginning of our century to see the work begin in joining a series of pre-existing paths, roadways and new paths. Te Araroa (which means “The Long Pathway”) was inaugurated in 2011, but the work is still in progress, in particular to try to eliminate the road sections. Are you ready to tackle its 3,000 km?
✱ As mentioned, the route is about 3,000 km long and connects Cape Reinga on the North Island to Bluff on the South Island. It takes from 3 to 6 months to travel, but the average is 4-5 months.
✱ The route is divided into various sections, some very short and passable in one day, while others involve several days in which you have to be self-sufficient, especially on the South Island.
✱ As it is still in development, inquire before departure, especially regarding any tolls or permits. And look for an updated map!
Complete 11 tasks (one from each section).

Tasks
1. Start: Cape Reinga
Cape Reinga is considered New Zealand's northernmost point and has become a popular tourist attraction since 2007, especially now that the road to it has been paved. All this has led to the protests of the Maori people, the indigenous population of the country. They believe this to be the most spiritually significant place in New Zealand, because it is here where the souls of the dead enter the underworld. Following these protests, the car park and other visitor facilities have been moved further away from the actual cape. The trail begins here and heads down the western coast.
✱ Read a book published after 2007 OR
✱ Read a book with an indigenous character (tell us who) OR
✱ Read a book whose author's initials can be found in CAPE REINGA.
2. Northland
The first region crossed by the Te Araroa Trail is Northland. The stages here are very short and for most of the route you follow the coast until you reach the peninsula that occupies a large part of this region. This will be crossed from side to side. You pass through several inhabited centers, so you can alternate nights spent camping with more relaxing nights in a hotel or hostel. Once you arrive at the Waikare Inlet you will have to choose whether to follow the path inland or, if you have the experience, you can cross that arm of the sea by renting a kayak. In this first section you will have to pay particular attention to wild dogs, which can be a serious danger.
✱ Read a book with a dog on the cover (post cover) OR
✱ Read a book in which the MC sleeps one night camping or in a hotel OR
✱ Read a book with an MC whose first name starts with a letter in NORTHLAND.
3. Auckland
The next portion takes us to the Auckland region. Here, too, we will mostly follow the coast, and there is at least one stretch in which you will have to decide whether to walk or rent a kayak. And yes, we'll also pass through the city of Auckland, one of the most important in the whole nation. This will be a constant of our journey. Although much
of the path crosses areas where nature gives its best, many inhabited centers are also entered, which allows walkers to both rest and be tourists in the cities.
✱ Read a book with a coastline or a kayak on the cover (post cover) OR
✱ Read a book set in a city (tell us where) OR
✱ Read a book whose title begins with a letter in AUCKLAND (ignore A, An or The).
4. Waikato and Manawatū-Whanganui
The next region is named after the river that flows through it, the Waikato River, which has always been an important source of livelihood for the Maori. Here we'll climb Mount Pirongia, which dominates the whole region. We will also cross an area rich in pastures and have the opportunity to visit the spectacular Waitomo Caves. In the subsequent region of Manawatū-Whanganui we will pass through two national parks: Tongariro
NP, which is home to three volcanic peaks, and Whanganui NP, which protects the upper regions of the Whanganui River. This section of the trail becomes a bit more tiring after a long time spent along the coast, but the landscapes are really worth the effort.
✱ Read a book set in a National Park (tell us where) OR
✱ Read a book in which the characters visit a cave or went underground OR
✱ Read a book where the first letter of every word in the title can be found in WAIKATO/MANAWATŪ-WHANGANUI (3 Word Minimum).
5. Wellington
The last region of the North Island we pass through is Wellington. After crossing the Tararua Ranges, we'll revisit the coast and arrive in New Zealand's capital, Wellington. This city boasts a lively artistic and cultural life, so it is worth stopping a few days to visit some of its attractions. I highly recommend the Te Papa Tongarewa Museum which is dedicated to the history of this nation since the Maori colonization. Be sure to take the time to rest in view of the path that still awaits us in the South Island. It is much more demanding than what we have faced so far. To reach the South Island we will board a ferry in Wellington that will take us to Ship Cove.
✱ Read a book tagged CULTURAL on its GR Homepage OR
✱ Read a book in which the MC visits or works in a museum OR
✱ Read a book whose title includes all the letters of FERRY (in any order).
