Kayleigh (kaylescau) | 6 comments Hi! Just some very short reflections:

1. I liked this format, I found it very easy to pick up and very easy to digest!

2. The setting felt very familiar to me, but the stories didn't necessary reflect experiences I'd had in Tokyo except for Flo's, I think many can relate to her experiences.

3. I think that it tapped into many of the nuances that you notice when you spend more than a 2-week holiday amount of time in a city.

4. I enjoyed reading each of the stories as they varied so much so I had many favourite characters! The only ones I didn't really enjoy were George and Mari.

5. I think that when a book is written by someone not native to the place, but the book places a lot of importance on the place itself, it means that I'll naturally want to learn why the author has a connection and how that will make the writing feel genuine.

Isabel (kittiwake) I liked the format of the book, starting with a touch of magical realism in the story of the tattoo, and with the links between the stories becoming more noticeable as I read further. It reminded me of Not the End of the World by Kate Atkinson, which also had subtle links between the stories. I liked the cat’s appearances and most of the human characters were sympathetic. My favourite story was the one with the agoraphobic man, the young boy and the drawings.

I have never been to Japan, but the setting and stories seemed authentic compared to things I have read by Japanese writers.
