Mike Sherer When I started reading D. W. Vogel’s new novel ‘The Risen’ I had no knowledge that it was based on a comic book and a card game. That doesn’t matter. I’m sure it matters to people who have read the comic book and/or played the card game, but to me it didn’t matter. It was a great story no matter what the source material was. Wendy Vogel brought the world to life with her rich characters and immersive descriptions of this alien world. The concepts were intriguing, the twists and turns of the story engaging, and the action fast-paced. Her detailed attention to the alien monsters, the Beneathers, made the horror come to life. Also distinctive were the Risen themselves. How many stories have you read where zombies are the heroes? This was my first, and I loved it. No matter the story behind the story, this story was a good read and I would recommend it to anyone looking for a tale where the ooze and slime and blood drips off the pages.
