We will be reading The Ferryman by Justin Cronin. We do not have a start date yet, but will decide on one when it gets a little closer. Everyone is free to join us. Please use spoiler tags as needed.

The Ferryman by Justin Cronin

From the New York Times bestselling author of The Passage comes a riveting standalone novel about a group of survivors on a hidden island utopia--where the truth isn't what it seems.

Founded by the mysterious genius known as the Designer, the archipelago of Prospera lies hidden from the horrors of a deteriorating outside world. In this island paradise, Prospera's lucky citizens enjoy long, fulfilling lives until the monitors embedded in their forearms, meant to measure their physical health and psychological well-being, fall below 10 percent. Then they retire themselves, embarking on a ferry ride to the island known as the Nursery, where their failing bodies are renewed, their memories are wiped clean, and they are readied to restart life afresh.

Proctor Bennett, of the Department of Social Contracts, has a satisfying career as a ferryman, gently shepherding people through the retirement process--and, when necessary, enforcing it. But all is not well with Proctor. For one thing, he's been dreaming--which is supposed to be impossible in Prospera. For another, his monitor percentage has begun to drop alarmingly fast. And then comes the day he is summoned to retire his own father, who gives him a disturbing and cryptic message before being wrestled onto the ferry.

Meanwhile, something is stirring. The Support Staff, ordinary men and women who provide the labor to keep Prospera running, have begun to question their place in the social order. Unrest is building, and there are rumors spreading of a resistance group--known as "Arrivalists"--who may be fomenting revolution.

Soon Proctor finds himself questioning everything he once believed, entangled with a much bigger cause than he realized--and on a desperate mission to uncover the truth.

Tasha I'm excited so many of us have this to read together. :)

I read The Passage series by Cronin and it was really good. I have high expectations for this one.

Tasha Looks like it's also up for a GRs giveaway at the moment.

I saw that too, Tasha.

Odd, I don't see the giveaway listed.

Tasha I guess I caught it at the end of the giveaway. I didn't enter since I have the NG edition although sometimes I do still enter the giveaways. Not sure why I didn't this time.

I just looked through my giveaways and yep, it ended on Nov 15. Guess I didn't win. lol. 10 copies available, 8971 people requesting, the odds were not in my favor.

Tasha Yeah, that's a pretty big spread. lol

Tasha I started this morning as I was away and needing to start a new book (on kindle). It has grabbed my interest immediately! The writing is really good too.

Elyse (winesaboutbooks) | 1552 comments I thought about starting it early as finished my other e-book this weekend but decided to start Mothered by Zoje Stage and Baby Teeth by Zoje Stage instead. lol

Vicki Willis | 880 comments Baby Teeth is such a trip, isn't it?

Elyse (winesaboutbooks) | 1552 comments Vicki Willis wrote: "Baby Teeth is such a trip, isn't it?"

Umm yes I'm scared. lol!

Tasha I couldn't finish that one! I 'returned' it to NG saying I could not read it, lol.

Tasha I haven't read any more since that first day but it's sitting on my nightstand. Will try to get some read tonight. I am very interested though, it starts off well.

I need to finish The Soulmate, then I'll be starting this one. Almost ready!

Elyse (winesaboutbooks) | 1552 comments I just read the first chapter, going in blind. Then I read the synopsis. Huh. This'll be interesting! I'm already getting a Truman Show vibe, with the isolated "living" situation and people "watching."

Elyse (winesaboutbooks) | 1552 comments ^^Prologue, rather.

Yes! I got that vibe too.

Vicki Willis | 880 comments I am going to finish one then start with this.

I haven't started yet either. I thought I would be ready, but my other read took longer than planned.

Tasha This is a long one! 15% in and it's very interesting. Proctor (view spoiler) I have no idea where this story is going!

Elyse (winesaboutbooks) | 1552 comments The long chapters, ugh, I hate. lol. I'm like 5% in? I read all of The Bodyguard by Katherine Center so I could give it back to my SIL so I didn't get to read any of this one. It feels like it's going to be depressing. lol

Tasha I agree, these chapters are too long. Trying to find a good place to stop is not easy. lol

I think it may end up being depressing too! At least the way it's heading at this point.

Vicki Willis | 880 comments I was worried about the book length and almost didn't pick this one because of it.
My current read is going FAST! and GOOD! The Only Survivors by Megan Miranda The Only Survivors - No one had it to buddy read, but I am 25% in and I just had a "chills up my spine" moment. lol
So I will be getting to this one sooner than I expected.
