Anita (anitafajitapitareada) | 1510 comments For this month's RATW, we're looking to read a book set in the Caribbean, or written by an author of Caribbean descent. The book can be fiction or non-fiction. The Caribbean contains 13 independent countries and several territories/dependencies that are part of other countries, including: Antigua and Barbuda, The Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Dominica, Grenada, Guyana, Haiti, Jamaica, Montserrat, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Suriname, and Trinidad and Tobago.

This is not an exhaustive list as there are many, many islands and territories so please feel free to do a little research and make sure to include your country or territory name with your nomination please!

Criteria:
1. Book must be by a female author (transwomen and women using male pseudonyms are women).
2. No books that have already been group reads within the past 3 years/36 months (check the group's bookshelf).
3. Do not nominate a book you have written or for which you are the publicist or lead marketer.
4. Consider availability. If a book is available in the US and UK (at minimum), and in paperback and ebook formats, more members can participate than if not.

To Nominate:
1. Give both the title of the book and the author's name when nominating to avoid confusion. Please use the 'add book/author' button when nominating.
2. Indicate whether you are willing or not to lead discussion if your nomination is chosen.
3. Maximum - one nomination per member.

Nominations will close August 22.

-Cuba: An American History by Ada Ferrer, Carol. Cuba.
-Force Ripe by Cindy McKenzie, Lindsey. Granada.

Carol (carolfromnc) | 4072 comments I nominate Ada Ferrer's Cuba: An American History. It's a 560-page winner of a Pulitzer Prize for History (2022). Ferrer was born in Cuba and raised in the US, and is a Professor of History and Latin American and Caribbean Studies at NYU. (The second review in the review feed is a robust 1* review that by implication flags whether this book will appeal.) (Cuba) I can lead.

That was a whammy of a 1 star review. Thanks for pointing that out, Carol. It was a good read on its own. Though she makes intriguing points, I get the sense that she overlooked a mightily indicative aspect of this book... the title.

When all you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail, as they say. She views Ferrer as a heretic which makes Ferrer extra appealing to me :)

Jamie Zaccaria I want to nominate Hurricane Child by Kacen Callender who "is Black, queer, trans, and uses they/them and he/him pronouns." Is this allowed?

Hi Jamie,
The criteria states: "1. Book must be by a female author (transwomen and women using male pseudonyms are women)," and we have had non-binary author nominations before.

Just let me know if this is your nomination, the country or territory, and whether you'd be willing to lead if your nomination wins, please.
