I'm about two thirds into the book now, and, while I quite like it, I'm wondering more and more if there are going to be any elements of science fiction in it at all.

So does the author try to give any materialistic explanations to all the magicky things in the book? (I see that's it's the first one in a series and wonder if it's the 'Buy more of "Maze Runner" now!' story all over again.)

No, no explanation. I quite enjoyed it, but there wasn't much in the way of scifi. And the novel wraps up quite satisfactorily, so you can stop at one (unlike The Hyperion, for example).

Pity. It is quite enjoyable, though, I agree. And it's good to know the novel has an ending.

I've finished it, and it's great: seeing that the other books seem to have more sci-fi in them, I might actually look further into this series.
