Kelly Green Hicks (kelly's bookish world) September 18-24 is banned books week, so a banned book will be our choice for this month. This is especially applicable with many school boards including our own wanting to ban books from school systems.

Christina I have already chosen to read “All Boys Aren’t Blue” by George M. Johnson.

Christina Road trip to the beach = finished audiobook!
I understand why they would choose to ban this one from school libraries with conversations of sexual acts and abuse.

message 4: by Malissa (new)

Malissa (libraryblondie) I loved that book! It's so important, and so well handled IMO. We considered it last year for a state award list (I'm on the committee) but decided that the content might he too graphic or triggering for classroom read alouds. But it was a hotly debated title in our meetings.

Malissa (libraryblondie) I read Gender Queer by Maia Kobabe (a graphic novel being pulled all over right now), and it was 6 of 5 stars for me. And has minimal actual sexual content. I would give it to teens and up for sure (it was published for adults). It's a great coming of age story of the author figuring out eir own gender identity and really helped me (as a cisgender person) understand that journey. I'll probably end up buying it for my bookshelf.

Kelly Green Hicks (kelly's bookish world) I bought this one last winter when it was banned in Meigs County. It is a very important book in my opinion.

John Willis I'm reading "The Marrow Thieves" by Cherie Dimaline.

message 19: by Kelly (new)

Kelly Green Hicks (kelly's bookish world) Is that a banned book or were you meaning to put that down for the author younger than you?
