The Ultimate Wings of Fire Discussion and Roleplaying Group discussion
The book that Lacewing was reading was titled, “The Studies of Flamesilk.” She snorted. She hated history books, and would not normally read this, but her adopted mom had told her to. The authors name was Admiral, and his theory was vitamin c helped them create flamesilk. This specific book was very boring and she found her eyes drifting off the pages every now and then. She saw another silkwing enter the library. She quickly looked down at the page, worried the Silkwing would see her staring.
Caleta's ears pricked at the sound of a quiet snort, and she glanced up to see who had made the noise. Across the room, another Silkwing was reading what looked like a very boring book, though Caleta couldn't see the title. She glanced down at her book again, finding where she had left off, and was just about to start reading again when she felt another dragon's eyes on her. Looking up again, she caught the other Silkwing staring down at her book intently. Getting to her feet, Caleta walked over to the other Silkwing and peered down at the title of the book they where reading. Moons above, Caleta, stop being weird, she thought. "That looks like an.... interesting book." She said, trying to make conversation to diffuse the awkwardness she felt.
I don’t think a book about tangerines and weird theories deserves to be published. Why does my mother find this interesting? I look up and see the Silkwing I was staring at get up. She walks over to me. “That looks like an…interesting book.” She said awkwardly. “Well, not really.” I say. “My name is Lacewing, what about you?” “Also, what book are you reading? Is it interesting?” I can tell she is trying not to be awkward, so I try to speak carefully, and not ask to many questions, hoping to diffuse the cloud of awkwardness hanging over us.
"Oh. What's it about?" She asked, shifting her weight from talon, trying to look at the title again. She blinked, focusing on the other Silkwing again. "I'm Caleta." She said with a small smile. "It's nice to meet you, Lacewing." She glanced down at the book that she was still holding. "I'm not very far in, but it's good so far. It's a story about a strange dragon from a far away land." Caleta's antennae twitched, and her tail swished across the floor, awkwardness still hanging over her and Lacewing.
I smile at her. “Well… you know Admiral right? He thinks that tangerines help us produce flamesilk.” I say, rolling my eyes. “Along with many other weird theories. It’s really boring.” Oh, but the book you are reading sounds really good.” I say, a wistful expression crossing my face. “My adopted mom is making me read this. I wish I could read something like that instead.”
"Yeah, he's a flamesilk, right?" Caltea said. She titled her head to the side as Lacewing spoke, slightly confused. "Why would.... tangerines help produce flamesilk?" She asked. She shuffled her talons, then sat down, her tail curling around her front legs. Caleta wrinkled her nose with a small laugh. "That does sound boring. I'll trade books with you, though. If you want." She held up her own book, thinking that maybe Admiral's book of 'wild theories' might be interesting after all.
(( by the way, what should this rp be about be about? What is the plot? Is there some evil person?))“That would be great!” I smile. “When you are done with it though can you tell me what it is about? If my mom figured out that I didn’t actually read it she would be really mad.” I give her my book, hoping the one she is reading is good. “Try not to die of boredom.” “Anyways, do you like to read?” I say, trying to keep the conversation going. Caleta seems very nice, and I don’t want to stop talking to her just yet.
(I'm up for anything, and I'll try to come up with some ideas :D)
Caleta smiled back at Lacewing. "Of course!" She said, handing the other Silkwing her book. "I'll try. Hopefully it's more interesting then mind-numbing." She said with a little laugh. "Yeah, I love to read. It's nice to escape from the world for a little bit, I guess." Caleta settled into a more comfortable position and opened her new book to the first page, though she kept her focus on Lacewing.
((Thank you!))“Yeah I like to read too. I like fiction the most though.” I glance at Caleta, and for the first time, I notice her wings. Hmm… I wonder what happened. I resist the urge to ask her, thinking it might be offensive.
(Of course :) )
"Yeah, fiction is definitely my favorite." Caleta said, glancing up at Lacewing with a smile. After a moment, she glanced back at her book, and managed to finish the first page before she felt Lacewing's gaze on her back, or more specifically, her wings. She shifted uncomfortably, then looked up at the other Silkwing. "It's ok to ask about my wings, if you want to." She said softly. her tail flicking across the floor with her nervousness.
“Sorry, I don’t mean to be rude… but what did happen?” I say, and then glance at her. I blow out a breath nervously. “I can tell you about my parents?” I say, hoping to make her feel better.
Caleta drew a long breath in, then let it out slowly, shuffling her talons on the library floor. It hadn't been very long since her metamorphosis, maybe half a year, and it was still hard to talk about what had happened. "Something went wrong when I had my metamorphosis," She started, staring pointedly at her claws. "When I came out of my cocoon, my wings wouldn't dry, and they where folded all wrong." Slowly, carefully, Caleta unfolded her wings, letting them rest flat on the floor. They where beautiful, a blend of blue and purple, but it was clear something was wrong in the way that they where folded and wrinkled in some places. "I can't fly because of it." She said sadly, finally looking up at Lacewing. "You're not rude at all." Caleta said with a small, reassuring smile. "Lots of dragons ask about it. And you don't have to tell me about your parents if you don't want."
“I’m sorry.” I reassuringly rest my talon on hers. “They are very beautiful though.” “It only feels fair to tell you about my parents, when you already told me about your wings.” I take a deep breath. “When my mom had my egg with my dad, they disappeared. Nobody knew who they were, or if they did they never told me, or where they went. I don’t even know their names. When I hatched I was already in the orphanage, and shortly later I was adopted. And I love my adopted mom, but sometimes I just wonder who they were and why they abandoned me.” Did they even love me? Was I not good enough? I think sadly.
"It's ok. It doesn't really bother me as much anymore." Caleta said, even though that was a lie. What had happened bothered her every time she saw Silkwings her age flying above the webs, and it bothered her every time her mom started to say 'Can you fly down and get-' and then stopped, because she remembered Caleta couldn't. It hurt everyday she didn't feel the air rushing through her wings as she soared through the clouds. "Thank you." Caleta said, smiling softly as she glanced down to see Lacewings talon over hers. Oddly enough, her stomach fluttered with butterflies at the sight. "Oh. I'm so sorry, Lacewing. That must be hard." She said quietly, and now it was her turn to put her talon over Lacewing's.
(( how about this for the plot: we are in the library and we overhear a assassin who is going to kill lady jewel and take over the hive. They already slipped the breath of evil into her and her guard’s food. We try to tell people about it, but they think we are just trying to get attention. So, we have to stop the assassin before he kills or captures lady jewel. Let me know if you don’t like it, I will gladly rp with a different story.))
“It’s fine. I say sadly. “My mom loves me a lot, so I’m not missing out.” I realize how sad it must be to not be able to fly. I smile at her. “Thanks for being so nice to me.”
(I love that idea!!! It sounds great :DDD I have another character, a Silkwing named Violet, who is kind of the adopted daughter of Lady Jewel, so maybe we could include her too)
"Still, it must be difficult sometimes." Caleta said gently, some of the heaviness of their conversation lifting from her shoulders. She smiled again. "Of course." She said, her antennae twitching, butterflies fluttering in her stomach again.
(( perfect! The only thing is, I’ll be afk for like 30 minutes to an hour sorry. Let’s start soon though!))
(Ok sounds great! I'm not sure if I'm going to be on at all for the rest of the day, but we can start as soon as we're both back :D)
I smile, and am about to ask about her family, before I hear a voice. “The plan is going well,” a voice hissed. My eyes widen in shock. “Did you do it?” Another voice says. “Yes.. I slipped the breath of evil into her and her guards food, and if we time it right… we should be able to kill lady jewel, and forcibly take the hive.” Oh my gosh. I look at Caleta in alarm. I realize we are the only people in the library, and so they must have thought they were alone.
Caleta, who had only just returned to her book, jerked her head up, eyes wide in shock, antennae twitching wildly. The voices where quiet, hushed, as if they didn't want to be heard. "Did you do it?" She heard one voice hiss, and another, deeper voice answered. "Yes. I slipped the breath of evil into her and her guards food." Caleta looked back at Lacewing, not bothering to listen to whatever was said next, her own expression matching hers. She glanced around, realizing they where the only ones in the library, and panic filled her chest. "Lacewing, come on!" She whispered, as quiet as she could. "We have to go!" She scampered to her feet, and in her haste, dropped her book, wincing as it thudded when it hit the floor.
I freeze in panic. Oh no. I realize there is no way for us to get out the main entrance without us being caught. I look around for other exits and see a window. We can go through and escape! And then I realize…. Caleta can’t fly. Oh no. Maybe if I could.. yes that’s it! “Caleta, get on my back,” I whisper. Caleta is a little younger then me, and I should be able to fly us down there safely. I can try. I hear the voice again. “Who was that?” The voice hisses. “Someone is here with us.” The voice reply’s. “Guard the exits.”
(That's ok!!)
Caleta froze for a moment, staring down at the book, her chest rising and falling rapidly with her short, panicked breathes. She blinked, trying to focus, then clambered clumsily onto Lacewing's back, trying her best to hold on. "Are you going to be able to fly?" She asked in a hushed voice, though it was no use now. She glanced back toward the sound of the other voices, her eyes wide with fear.
“I should be able to at least brace our fall,” I say, mostly trying to convince myself. My voice trembles. ”Hold on tight.” I step out of the window, my wings bracing our fall. We land safely, but a pain from landing runs up my back and wings. “Are you alright?” I ask Caleta nervously.
"O-Ok." Caleta said, her voice shaking as much as she was. She gripped Lacewings shoulders and squeezed her eyes shut as Lacewign took a step foreward and fell out of the window, and after a moment, she felt Lacewing land safely, albiet a bit hardly, on the ground. Quickly, Caleta hopped off of Lacewings back and nodded. "Yeah, I'm ok." She said. She glanced back up at the window above their heads, then tugged on Lacewing's arm. "We should go." she said.
“Follow me,” I say to Caleta. “I know a place we can go.” I try to hurry down the road and still look not suspicious at the same time. My heart is still beating at super fast, so I try to calm myself down. We will be fine right? My mind worries. What if they saw us? We could become a target. I shiver.
(Ohmygosh I'm so sorry, I meant to respond earlier but it completely slipped my mind ;-;)
Taking a deep breath, Caleta quickly followed after Lacewing, glancing around, hoping they wouldn't be spotted. We'll be fine, they didn't see us, don't worry, everything is ok, Caleta thought, trying to keep herself calm. Pausing for a moment to look back, she saw a dragon standing at the window they had escaped from, and she let out a small gasp. "Oh, moons." She whispered, hurrying after Lacewing, her heart pounding with fear.
(It’s fine!) I keep hurrying down the road, breaking into a run, and look back to make sure Caleta is following me. She is looking back at the window. Oh no. In the open window frame, I see a dark green Silkwing scowling out the window, looking directly at us. Then a large hive wing comes into view. The assassin, I guess in shock. I bet they will come for us next. Wait. I was thinking about going to my house, but if they know who we are, our houses will not be safe. Or our family, I realize. “W-w-we need to warn our family.” I whisper to Caleta. “They will come for them next, after us.” Probably as as hostages.
Caleta stared at the window and the two dragons for another long moment, her entire body quaking with fear, before starting to run again, hurrying to catch up with Lacewing. Quickly, she ducked into an alleyway, tugging Lacewing along with her, though it was no use because she was sure the Silkwing and Hivewing had already seen them. "O-ok. How? I don't want to put them in danger." She clawed anxiously at the ground, glancing behind her as if she was expecting the two dragons to be right behind them.
I feel a tug, and I see Caleta pull me in a dark alleyway.“T-that’s true,” I say as a tear falls down my face. “I guess we should tell the guards first. Not that they c-can do anything. We could at least try. They might listen?” I say, mostly to convince myself. “Where should we go?” I ask Caleta. “They probably know who we are, so our homes aren’t safe,” Or our family, I think anxiously. I duck into another alleyway, hoping that the two dragons won’t follow us.
Seeing a tear fall down Lacewing's face, Caleta started to cry too, all of her fear and panic pouring out at once. Her chest rose and fell rapidly, her wings starting to tremble. "Y-yeah, we could try." Caleta said, her voice shaking. "But why would t-they listen to us?" She started to pace anxiously up and down the alleyway, her antennae twitching with her nervousness. "Maybe we could go to the p-palace and try to tell someone?"
I see Caleta break out into tears, and know I have to be strong for her. I take a calming deep breath.“Yeah, we should do that,” I say gently. I twine my tail around Caleta’s. “Do you know anyone there who could help and believe us?” I stay there for a minute letting us calm down.
Caleta matched Lacewing's breathing, hoping to calm herself down. She closed her eyes for a moment, focusing on breathing in and out, trying to tamp down her rising panic. Caleta opened her eyes when Lacewing twined her tail around hers, feeling oddly comforted. "I know a Silkwing that lives in the palace. She's Lady Jewel's adopted daughter." She paused, stuggling to think over her whirlwind of thoughts. "Her name is Violet. We could try to tell her."
“Okay,” I say gently. I get up and set off to the palace. “How close is she to lady jewel? The assassin said he slipped it into her closest guards food.” I pause for a minute and look in Caletas eyes. “Will she be infected too?” I look down at the road. Please, I pray. Don’t be mind controlled.
Caleta followed quickly after Lacewing, trying to remember what she could about Violet. They'd only met a few times, but she had always been nice, and Caleta prayed that she would listen to her and Lacewing now. "She usually spends all of her time in the palace, and she and Lady Jewel are together a lot." Caleta explained. During her quick trips to the palace with her mother, who was a cook in the kitchens, she had noticed that when Violet wasn't in the library or the gardens, she was with Lady Jewel. "Not many dragons know about her, so I don't think she'll be infected. Hopefully." She finished uncertaintly.
We keep walking down the road, and I see the palace in view. We are so close! My heart surges at the prospect of safety at last.I nod, then unexpectedly break out in hysterical laughter. “Hahahahaha!” My voice breaks and I stop laughing, a hysterical tear falls down my snout, and on to the road. Splash. “Sorry,” I say to Caleta. “It’s just so surreal.” I say, my face sobering. “We were just talking peacefully in the library, and now we are stopping a assassin.”
I pray with all my heart Caletas friend will listen.
Caleta's hopes lifted as the Jewel Hive palace came into view down the road, and she picked up her her pace slightly, desperately wanting to be somewhere safe and familiar. At Lacewing's laugh, she glanced over at the other Silkwing, her expression confused and quizical. "It's ok. It is kind of weird now that I think about it." A tremble ran through her body and she glanced over her shoulder, then back at the palace. "Come on. We should keep going."
I see Caleta look at me and over my shoulder with an odd look on her face. Is she worried? I break into a near run, hoping to be safe at last. We keep walking down the road, and I look down at the treestuff road. I imagine not very long ago, when Queen Wasp ruled the hives. It must be a lot like this. I shiver. Always feeling watched, being hunted, all your loved ones being in danger, and you being the only one who can save them. At least I have Caleta. I smile at her, and feel glad to have someone to share in this. We are almost at the palace. It can see it in detail now, all the dragons bustling in and out. “Where will we find Violet?” I ask Caleta, catching her eye. “Is there anywhere she normally is?”
Caleta hurried to catch up with Lacewing, the palace getting closer with every stride. As they reached the gates, Caleta slowed down, changing her direction so she could walk up to one of the guards. "In the gardens. She spends a lot of time there, so we'll check there first." She said to Lacewing, returning the other Silkwing's smile, though there was still fear in her expression. Caleta then turned to the guard and put on her most polite smile. "Hi, I was sent for by my mother. She's a cook in the kitchens, and she said she needed a little extra help today." She shuffled her talons, hoping the guard would believe her and let them through.
“Ok let’s do that first,” I say to Caleta. She smiles. We approach the main gates, and Caleta makes up a lie about her mother. She looks convincing to me.
“And who are you?” The guard said squinting at me suspiciously. “I’m Lacewing,” I say. “I’m.. her and her moms best friend. I’m showing them a cool new recipe that I know,” I smile, hoping to look convincing. I hope it works…
"Yes, that's right." Caleta said quickly, glancing over at Lacewing. "She's teaching my mother and I how to make desserts for Lady Jewel." She put on another smile, hoping her panic and nervousness weren't showing. The guard squinted at them for another moment, then stepped aside to let them through. "Thank you!" Caleta said, grabbing Lacewing's arm as she hurried toward the gate and into the courtyard, already looking for Violet. "Look for a Silkwing dragonet with purple scales and lots of jewelry. She might be around here somewhere."
The guard let’s us pass. I exhale in relief. Caleta grabs my arm, and we look through every nook of the garden. It’s beautiful. The sprawling vines and beautiful flowers catch my eye. I see a couple of leaf wing gardeners.. My eyes boggle as I see one of them close her eyes and grow a flowery vine. She opens her eyes and smiles at me.
I Finally land my eyes on a purple dragonet. I approach her cautiously with Caleta. I wonder if this dragonet is infected too, I worry. How close is she to lady jewel?

location - jewel hive library
Caleta walked through the doorway of the library, brushing shoulders with other dragons as they passed her. The smell of books filled her nose, and she breathed in deeply, feeling comforted at the sight of all the bookshelves around her. Keeping her wings folded tightly against her back, she padded up and down the rows of shelves, trying to find a few books to take to her web for the week. She found a book, and deciding to find the others later, settled down on one of the woven rugs, curling up to read.
