Valancourt Books discussion

A tremendous amount of research goes into bringing an author's books back into print and I'm finding more and more information that I think might interest other McDowell enthusiasts. That's why I decided to start a blog dedicated to his life and works, Cold Moon Over McDowell.

I've compiled reviews and articles (many not previously available online) that I will share throughout the next few months. So, if you're interested in Michael McDowell, you're welcome to read along.

I'm always interested in hearing feedback about the posts. If there's anything you'd like to see on there, let me know.

As you know, we've already brought many of McDowell's works back into print: The Amulet, The Elementals, Cold Moon Over Babylon and soon Katie and Gilded Needles will be added to that list (and that's not all, I promise!).

Congratulations ! Poppy Bright mentions in the forward to "the Flood" (Centipede Press edition) that Valancourt was to thank for sparking the re-interest in Mr. Mcdowell's writing. She also mentions he wrote under a number of pen names one of which has not been revealed as of yet. This is quite intriguing.

I loved THE ELEMENTALS--it made my top list (posted on Amazon) for last year. I think I'm going to look at purchasing The Amulet next...

His writing style is smooth as silk.

I didn't know that, Karl! That just made my day.

I haven't seen the Centipede edition in person (yet!). How are the "rare photos" he included?

Kimberly, The Amulet is my personal fav of his books. The story is not as strong as his others but it was my first McDowell.

The photos are amazing, the reproduction quality is superb - I have only looked through the first volume, so I have five more to look at. Some are quarter page some are half page and some are full page. The books are beautifully produced and are works of art in themselves.

Jealous. I asked for the Centipede edition for my birthday which is later this month. We'll see if the Valancourt CEO decided to be nice and splurge for his employees this year. ;)

My birthday is later this month as well. I feel that calls for free Valancourt books for all members! ;)

Seriously, after reading all Char & Jon's reviews (which got me hooked on to Valancourt), I realized that I need to add a new "Valancourt" shelf. The problem is, the ones I read in e-version (ex. ELEMENTALS), I now "need" to buy physical copies of to display.

(Actually, it seems that this should entitle Charlene and Jon to more free books than myself.....)LOL!

I have the Centipede box, not only is it beautiful produced, but I am almost done with the first book. You should not be disappointed if you enjoy southern Gothic with a touch of the creature.

I loved that series so much. I love McDowell's style. You gone love it too. :)

I've just finished Gilded Needles and loved it. I think I forgot to breathe through the last 1/4 of the book. In this book, he's really picked up the style of the old 19th century American "city mysteries" novels I enjoy, for example The Quaker City: The Monks of Monk Hall and George Thompson's Venus in Boston and Other Tales of Nineteenth-Century City Life.

What did you think of the opening scenes? I was immediately sucked in.

Loved the contrast between "respectable" New York and the seedy Black Triangle that starts the book. It's like a panoramic view. Very, very nicely done.

For as much as I love McDowell's supernatural novels, Gilded Needles, and Wicked Stepmother stand on their own merits. The way he portrays the difference between the classes (in GN), and his artistry in depicting the "atmosphere" in every novel, really puts his writing in a class all of its own.

YAY!! Another I had in e-version, and paperback for the shelves. I will definitely be re-reading that one in the future!

Having just read the book I cannot wait to see the movie, which is due for release soon in the UK as well....it's looks and feels great...perhaps we can get a discussion together when a few of us have viewed :)
