Theresa | 16074 comments Daniel, who is confined to a wheelchair, early one morning witnesses the kidnapping of an Asian university student in front of his home. Initially he is not sure what he has seen and if he should say anything to anyone because the girl voluntarily got into the guy's car; she was not forced. Soon, however, he learns of a missing girl and that girl is the one he saw. The plot, which covers 10 days, revolves around Daniel's role as sole witness, how and to whom to communicate, will they believe him. Then the impossible happens: the kidnapper communicates with him through email. From there the suspense escalates - will the kidnapper come after him, and if he does, can Daniel save the girl and also survive.

The mystery/thriller story is frankly a bit thin, with an absurd lack of standard investigative procedure by the police and a few other 'problems' though not completely absurd. What engages you is Daniel, a 26 year old man with a genetic degenerative disease (spinal muscular atrophy 'SMA') who lives an independent and full life even though he cannot do most of the things we take for granted - talk, walk, move his arms, cough. Daniel is funny, intelligent, kind, and truly feels lucky though he is destined to die from SMA quite young. I have never before read such an upbeat and entertaining book involving such a debilitating disability.

There is also a wonderful collection of side characters, a virtual love song to Athens, GA and Bulldog football. But most of all there is Daniel, who reminds us: I have the certainty that I took part in this life. I was an active participant. I did not just sit at my computer and let it all pass me by.

Can we say the same?
