Max was out of his mind with fear for Gina. Grady was holding back. I'm just glad Max realized he needed Grady before he killed him.
Max was hanging on by a thread at that point and Grady showing up was the last straw. He just snapped. Grady sort of has a death wish so I'm not certain whether he could not fight back or just chose not to.
Max was at the point where he needed to relieve his frustration. Grady served that purpose well. Grady was ready to let Max kill him because he was frustrated that he had led his enemies to Molly, but first, he needed to give Max information. I believe Grady was holding back initially, but Max got the upper hand, and Grady couldn't break the hold. Fortunately, Grady knew Max needed information from him and found a way to get Max to listen.
I was surprised that Max lost so much control that he was ready to kill Grady. I also believe that Grady was probably holding back but at some point was ready to die. Without Molly, he really didn’t have much purpose anymore.
